The Having-My-Cake-and-Eating-It-Too 49ers Mock Draft

I have fallen deeply in draft crush with both Odell Beckham Jr. and Pierre Desir. This mock intends to bring both of them into the fold, while preserving the value of our 6 top 100 picks. Each of these moves should, of course, only be executed if the targeted player has already fallen to the desired trade partner. Indulge my optimism (insanity?) for a while. Let's look at our original picks:

1(30)
2(56)
2(61)
3(77)
3(94)
3(100)
4(129)
5(170)
7(242)
7(243)
7(245)

It's a beautiful thing, isn't it? 6 in the top 100. My first concern is cornerback, of course, but I also want Beckham, and he's rated higher than most of the corners with whom I'd feel comfortable. So, a trade with the Dolphins ensues. They need help at skill positions + OL, especially RB and G, and they can, in all likelihood, get Su'a-Filo at #30. If OBJ drops past the Jets, we send the Dolphins #30, #94, #129, and LMJ for #19, and take OBJ.

1(19): Odell Beckham Jr. / WR, LSU
2(56)
2(61)
3(77)
3(100)
5(170)
7(242)
7(243)
7(245)

Now, on to cornerback. Obviously, we can't only take Desir. He's a guy you take after taking a surer guy at the same position. That's where we are. Unfortunately, there aren't any surer corners than Desir at 56, so we trade up again. The Pats are a team with a smart front office and a good roster, so why not offer them a fair deal? 56 and 61 is perfectly fair compensation for #29 overall, if Kyle Fuller or Jason Verrett has made it that far.

1(19): Odell Beckham Jr. / WR, LSU
1(29): Jason Verrett / CB, TCU or Kyle Fuller / CB, Virginia Tech
3(77)
3(100)
5(170)
7(242)
7(243)
7(245)

Now we've reached the point where I feel comfortable completing my goal by drafting Pierre Desir at #77. I'm not sure he'll still be there, but this mock is all about optimism (if he's gone, Jaylen Watkins should be around), and I love this kid. What a baller. I mean seriously. He's going to be awesome.

1(19): Odell Beckham Jr. / WR, LSU
1(29): Jason Verrett / CB, TCU or Kyle Fuller / CB, Virginia Tech
3(77): Pierre Desir / CB, Lindenwood (Jaylen Watkins / CB, Florida)
3(100)
5(170)
7(242)
7(243)
7(245)

And here comes still our fourth top 100 pick. See? Value conserved. And we get 2 premier players at our main positions of need. And we don't try to fill our small number of open roster spaces with 11 million players. I digress. I think a C who can also play G or a pass rusher is a good pick here, and unfortunately, Martin and Swanson are probably both off the board here, and I don't like any pass rushers here (maybe Will Clarke), so the pick is Weston Richburg.

1(19): Odell Beckham Jr. / WR, LSU
1(29): Jason Verrett / CB, TCU or Kyle Fuller / CB, Virginia Tech
3(77): Pierre Desir / CB, Lindenwood (Jaylen Watkins / CB, Florida)
3(100): Weston Richburg / C, Colorado State
5(170)
7(242)
7(243)
7(245)

In the fifth, we have a few options, and I'd love to take a pass rusher here, but since we lost LMJ, have a returner in OBJ, have brought in so many RBs, and there aren't really any pass rushers around at #129, I think we take one of the RBs we brought in. Storm Johnson is a guy I really like, and he should be available at this point. Charles Sims may also be there, and he is a fantastic receiver for a running back, but not a great runner. I think the pick is Storm Johnson.

1(19): Odell Beckham Jr. / WR, LSU
1(29): Jason Verrett / CB, TCU or Kyle Fuller / CB, Virginia Tech
3(77): Pierre Desir / CB, Lindenwood (Jaylen Watkins / CB, Florida)
3(100): Weston Richburg / C, Colorado State
5(170): Storm Johnson / RB, USF
7(242)
7(243)
7(245)

Who mocks the 7th round? I just made a list last time I did one of these, but it wasn't worth the effort, so I'll finish with the 5th round.

Those are 5 players I am incredibly happy to have on my team, and I am certifiably insane. There is almost no way we walk away from this draft with OBJ and a premier corner prospect, but it's very possible to come away with very good players at both positions in some other way. For now, enjoy a little optimism in the middle of a very, very bad couple of weeks.
