Draft Thinking – Positional Years to Free Agency (YTFA) – Review from 2013

Hey all,

We all know that Niners FO believes in building the roster through the draft, and YorMarBaalkBaugh consider it the primary roster-construction tool for a 1-5 year period. So, as we enter the final 2 weeks of this draft season, I want to take a look back to this tool we used last year to identify what the Niners FO might do going into the 2013 draft. It turns out that this exercise was fairly predictive of the positions Niners would target, and so I want to do it again in 2014. After this review, I'll focus on 2014 draft, and then follow it up with a final post to include some other elements that are related to predicting how our draft might unfold.

(Note: My main goal is to try to accurately predict what the FO will do in 2 weeks. So please feel free to comment on how we can improve this process. Any feedback will be helpful and make predictions better.)

Please read the FanPost from 2013 for context.

There are 3 primary predictions from last year's exercise:

1. Of the positions predicted, 11 of the 12 were exactly right!

The only miss was at KR because we did not draft a single guy who could have done that job.

2. I also did a prioritized list of how the positions should be targeted and it was nearly half right!

Prediction was:

FS, DE, TE, CB, WR, QB, DT, KR, OT, OLB, RB, ILB.

2013 Drafted positions in order:

FS, DE, TE, OLB, WR, RB, DT, ILB, QB, OT, and CB.

3. I had thought that Baalke might add an extra 2-3 picks via trades.

Prediction was:

2-3 draft picks rolled over into 2014 draft.

Actual trade result:

1 picked rolled over (from Titans trade)

That's all for now...Look for 2014 Positional YTFA predictions in the next day or so...
