2014 NN community mock draft: With the 46th pick, the Pittsburgh Steelers select ...

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The 2014 Niners Nation NFL mock draft is off and running. We move on to the Pittsburgh Steelers, courtesy of user SigepPT49er.

We're back for the 46th pick of the 2014 Niners Nation Community Mock Draft. You can see previous picks below in the draft table. You can also follow the mock draft board through this story stream.

With the 46th pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, SigepPT49er and the Pittsburgh Steelers select Deone Bucannon, S, Washington State. He also considered cornerback Marcus Roberson, cornerback Jaylen Watkins, and offensive tackle JuWuan James. Here are his thoughts on the pick:

The secondary for the Steelers is the biggest overall area of need. Other areas that they want to add depth include WR, TE, and O-Line (where injury has crippled the team the last 2 years). Their secondary is similar to the Niners with a lot of turnover now or in the near future. This is possibly the last year for Ike Taylor before he is priced out of Pittsburgh. Head and Shoulders Polamalu can't stay healthy and is on the down side of his career. This draft is very deep at corner but not so much at safety.

By addressing the linebacker's in the first, the Steelers miss out on the top tier of CB. In the middle of the second round, the best remaining CB are Roberson and Watkins, or developmental projects like McGill and Desir. The drop off in talent isn't as severe in this group of players as opposed to the next tier of safeties. Terrance Brooks is the only other safety in the top 100. There are too many teams in need of safety help to count on landing one of the top 5 in the draft. I think they gamble on CB being there in the 3rd round.

That brings me to Bucannon. He's 6'1, 211 Senior from Wash St. He brings the lumber on runners and crossing routes. He creates fumbles with hits and is skilled at the "rip" during his tackles (like PW52) creating more turnovers. His overall range is improving and he had 6 INTs this past year, 13 for his career. His hips are considered "stiff" and that's why he projects to SS. He will occasionally whiff trying for the big hit. Comparisons: his floor is C. Dahl, his Ceiling is D. Goldsen.

Trevor Woods: I don't think that Bucannon can start from day one, but he can be drafted to eventually replace an aging Troy Polamalu. Bucannon fits the Steelers scheme, as he is a hard-hitting run defender who plays well when he takes gambles. He's still raw, but has the potential to be a good starting safety. The Steelers didn't address their need of cornerback in the first and could have done so here.

Nick Chiamardas: If there was ever a pick that was a match made in heaven this may be it. Bucannon is arguably the hardest hitting safety in this class and could eventually replace Troy Polomalu in the box. He epitomizes the strong safety position with his physicality but is fast and athletic enough to play free safety where he'd have to begin his career if he's to see playing time right away in Pittsburgh. I'd still like to see the Steelers address the cornerback or defensive line position but adding Bucannon to the secondary is a nice pick.
