Aldon Smith pleads no contest to four charges, sentencing hearing set for July 25

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Aldon Smith has pled no contest to three felony weapons possession charges, and one misdemeanor DUI charge. We look at what's next for Aldon.

Fooch's Update: The prosecutor says the max penalty is 4 years, 4 months in prison. I'd imagine the two sides agreed to something significantly less.

Well, we got some new information about the Aldon Smith guns and DUI charges, but we continue to wait for any sort of finality. Cam Inman was on hand at the trial and provided a rundown of things on Twitter. Smith plead no contest to all four charges, including three felony weapons possession charges, and one misdemeanor DUI charge. A plea of no contest is considered the same as a plea of guilty, although he's not actually "saying" he's guilty. Gotta love legal technicalities!

The sentencing hearing is not scheduled until July 25. I'm not entirely sure why it is spread out so far. The prosecutor will make a recommendation to the judge. The judge does not HAVE to go with the prosecutor's suggestion, but generally speaking they will do so. We don't yet know what the prosecutor will recommend, but given the plea, there's obviously been some kind of discussion on this.

We'll wait and see what July 25 brings at court, but in the meantime, we get to wait and see what kind of punishment the NFL decides to hand down. Matt Barrows made a good point that the league will probably wait until the LAX situation is resolved. Smith is looking at a potential misdemeanor charge there, but nothing has been filed yet.
