49ers open rookie minicamp with rookies, some second year players

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers open minicamp with an assortment of rookies and second year players. We take a look at some of the rules, and a basic minicamp depth chart.

Fooch's Update #3: Matt Maiocco has the full list of players in camp today, including tryouts. I've added them to the depth chart below.

Fooch's Update #2: UC Davis LB Colin Kelly is getting a tryout as well.

The San Francisco 49ers open their rookie minicamp today, running through Sunday. It is part of their seven week rookie football development program, and is the one time they can run organized work over the weekend during this period.

We broke down minicamp ten days ago in a CBA breakdown piece. The minicamp allows for offense vs. defense work, but no live contact is allowed. That means no live blocking, tackling, pass rushing or bump-and-run. Helmets re permitted, but no pads.

What is most interesting about this weekend's minicamp is that more than just rookies are allowed to take part. Second year players can participate if they were not on the 53-man roster last season. That means last year's NFI and practice squad players can join in the fun. Carter Bykowski, Chuck Jacobs, Marcus Lattimore, Luke Marquardt, Al Netter, Mike Purcell and Colton Schmidt are all eligible to participate. Tank Carradine and Quinton Dial both spent time on the 53-man roster, so they are not allowed. Lawrence Okoye was on the regular injured reserve list, and not the NFI list, so he cannot participate.

The 49ers will obviously not have a "full roster" of players for the minicamp, but here is how the depth chart will sort of break down:

QB: Kory Faulkner
