This Saturday, San Francisco 49ers legend Joe Montana is hosting what is being billed as the final football game at Candlestick Park. It is billed as Joe Montana vs. Dan Marino, and they will be bringing in an assortment of retired NFL talent. Here is a quick rundown of the schedule of events (all times Pacific):
1:30 p.m. - Parking lot opens
3:30 p.m. - Stadium gates open
4:30 p.m. - Pregame featuring SFPD vs. SFFD flag football game
5:45 p.m. - Player warmups
7:00 p.m. - Kickoff for Legends of Candlestick Football Finale
Television: The game will not be broadcast, but Kenny Mayne and Alex Flanagan will be there on behalf of ESPN and NFL Network, respectively. While we won't get large chunks of the game, their appearances would seem to almost guarantee we'll see segments on ESPN and NFL Network.
Tickets: Still available through Ticketmaster. Prices range from $30-$50
Concessions: Will be open during the game
Rosters: Joe Montana will lead a 49ers team, and Dan Marino will lead the All Stars. Both teams include former 49ers, and there were some slightly odd choices, but I'd imagine they were figured out for purposes of balance. There are plenty of potentially interesting "storylines" among the matchups.
My personal favorite will be the chance to see Dwight Clark square off against Everson Walls and re-enact The Catch. We'll see if Walls is willing to once again be on the defending end, but I have to think someone will at least try to get something with them. The 49ers painted a little spot in the corner of the end zone where The Catch happened, so it would seem foolish not to do something with it.
