In a move to help the team, Ahmad Brooks restructured his contract to help save the team $2 million this season. The Niners are now just under $10 million in cap space. Does this mean extensions soon? I think one will be coming very quickly. The linemen will probably be the first to get an extension. Alex Boone is deserving of a bump in salary and Mike Iupati will be deserving of a new contract. Trent Baalke and Jim Harbaugh will probably want to keep one or both if possible. Signing both may make it harder to resign Michael Crabtree.
It would make sense for Crabtree to wait until after this season to sign a new contract. If he has a big year, he could command a good amount of money. The Niners will make a strong attempt to keep him considering he is Kap's go to receiver. At training camp so far, the reviews are that he seems faster and his connection with Kap is as strong as ever. Even with a loaded WR corp, Kap will continue to look for Crabtree and his stats could resemble his 2012 stats. That year he had 85 receptions, 1,105 yards, and 9 touchdowns. With a year like that, his pay day could go up compared to signing a contract now.
