The San Francisco 49ers kick off the 2015 NFL regular season on Monday Night Football, on September 14. That game. means San Francisco is now a mere 48 days away from kicking off its 2015 regular season. In the spirit of that approaching date, I thought I would steal this idea from our Oakland Raiders site.
Who wore it best: RB Sammy Johnson (1974-1976)
We'll see what some upcoming numbers bring, but for now, this might be rock bottom. The list of players to wear No. 48 is short and not particularly glorious. Johnson spent two and a half seasons with the 49ers, during which he rushed 123 times for 474 yards and seven touchdowns. He also caught 39 passes for 335 yards.
The picture above is Aldon Smith, who wore the number during training camp his rookie season. He switched numbers in the regular season, and has been No. 99 ever since. The photo editor includes two pictures of him in No. 48, and I figured it was slightly odd enough to roll with it on the cover.
Who wears it now: LB Shayne Skov, TE Busta Anderson (2015-present)
The number is currently sported by two players heading into training camp. Both Skov and Anderson face an uphill climb to earn a roster spot. The best opportunity for both is probably the practice squad, but maybe one or both surprises us. If one or both does earn a roster spot, I have to think they would both change jerseys. Skov likely would switch to something in the 50s, while Anderson would potentially switch to something in the 80s. We'll see what the beginning of September brings.
