The San Francisco 49ers activated three players from the NFI list this week, but they have added another player. Jim Tomsula announced that Michael Wilhoite is opening training camp on the NFI list with a minor muscle strain. There is no word on how he suffered the injury. He was a participant in the 49ers offseason workout program, so it would seem to be something from the last month.
Tomsula also mentioned that Nick Bellore is sick, and visiting the doctor about his illness. It does not sound like he will be on the NFI list. Until Bellore returns, this means the 49ers inside linebackers at the start of camp will include NaVorro Bowman, Philip Wheeler, Nick Moody, Desmond Bishop and Shayne Skov.
Tomsula said Wilhoite should not be long on the NFI list, but in the meantime, this opens the door for more practice snaps for the rest of the group. Wheeler and Moody seem like favorites to get first team work. Tomsula was effusive in his praise for Moody following the offseason workout program. He has focused on special teams early in his career, but he potentially has an intriguing opportunity. Wheeler on the other hand has veteran experience at the position. If Wilhoite's injury lasted more than a few days, Wheeler could very well work his way into a more significant role next to Bowman. We'll figure out more on this over the next couple weeks.
