Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson failed to eclipse the 100-yard rushing mark against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. That’s notable for the fact that the 49ers had allowed a 100-yard rusher in their past seven games. Johnson was part of that streak, when he put up over 150 yards against the 49ers in Week 5.
The 49ers do not have a strong defense. They do not have a good defensive coordinator, in my humble opinion. They do not have a good run defense even when NaVorro Bowman is on the field. Arik Armstead, DeForest Buckner and Quinton Dial make for what should be a potent defensive line, but they can’t stop anything for the most part.
But Johnson carried the ball 19 times for just 55 yards on Sunday. He did have an 18-yard touchdown run, but aside from that, he was largely ineffective. He went into Sunday’s game with 705 rushing yards and a 4.5 yards-per-carry average, including a season-best 5.8 yards-per-carry average against the 49ers in Week 5.
San Francisco allowed Mark Ingram to rush for 158 yards, Jacquizz Rodgers to rush for 154 yards, LeSean McCoy for 140 yards, the aforementioned Johnson for 157 yards, Ezekiel Elliott to put up 138 yards, Christine Michael to put up 106 yards and Fozzy Whittaker to hit 100 yards exactly in their last seven games prior to Sunday.
