Fooch's note: The team waived UDFA linebacker Kevin Anderson to make the McManis signing official.
The San Francisco 49ers are in the process of a UDFA roster move. The team is working out the details on a contract with Memphis Tigers linebacker Wynton McManis. Tom Schad of the Commercial Appeal reported the signing, but it is my understanding there are still some Is to dot and Ts to cross. Thanks to mulbring for pointing out the news earlier today.
The 49ers do not announce any move until it is completed, so we won't hear anything from them on this signing for probably a few days. The team has the week off from practice, and will be returning next week with OTAs. Between now and then we will find out who McManis is going to replace on the roster.
McManis was a team captain last season, recording 63 tackles, with 5.5 for a loss. Over the course of his four year career, McManis played in 47 games, moving into the starting lineup his junior season. He started the first five games, played in the first eight total, but then missed the final three games with an injury. He has spent the offseason working out at Fast Twitch Sports Performance.
I haven't found any scouting reports on McManis, but came across some comments he made at Media Day before the season started. Here are his Pro Day numbers, and I have posted a video of some highlights below.
Ht/Wt: 6'0, 237 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.68
Bench press: 21
Vertical: 34 1/2"
Broad: 123"
20-yd shuttle: 4.39
3-cone: 7.14
The 49ers did not draft or sign any inside linebackers this offseason, which caught some of us off guard. Gerald Hodges and Michael Wilhoite will compete to start next to NaVorro Bowman. McManis is likely a camp body that will look to impress enough to earn a practice squad spot.
