The San Francisco 49ers will be making roster cuts in the coming days to get down to 75 players. In light of Friday night’s preseason game against the Green Bay Packers, the snap count is of particular note. It might not be entirely predictive, but it gives us something to assess as we try and figure out who might get cut, and what preseason Week 4 playing time might look like.
Right off the bat, the most interesting information would be who did not play, and who played very few snaps. Running back Kelvin Taylor sat out the game, and Kendall Gaskins played nine special teams snaps, but no offensive snaps. Matt Barrows made a good point, suggesting this could mean Taylor is going to get a lot of work this coming Thursday. That makes sense. But will Gaskins hang around and get a lot of work too, or will he be released with the Tuesday cuts?
One of the more totals from the game saw Ian Silberman only play one special teams snap, and no offensive snaps. I did not notice any mention of an injury on his one special teams snap, so I don’t quite know what to make of his absence from the game. Any thoughts?
We did see Will Redmond in action for the first time. That might be the best news to come from the snap count. Jim O'Neil had previously said he did not think Redmond was quite all the way back from his ACL injury. It would seem since then the trainers have decided he is back, and that is good news. I imagine he will get a lot of snaps this Thursday against the San Diego Chargers.
