The San Francisco 49ers have begun the process of cutting down to 53 players, and it is time for a roster cuts tracker. The team cut down to 77 players over the weekend, and has two more cuts to make by Tuesday afternoon. They will then face the San Diego Chargers on Thursday, and have to follow that up with 18 more roster moves to get down to 53 players. They will be mostly cuts, but we could see some trades if the team can land draft picks in return.
The 49ers most notable roster cut thus far is Erik Pears. It is not a shocking cut, but I figured it would happen in final cuts. The team also cut Jerome Simpson over the weekend, and Chip Kelly said the hope was to give him time to land elsewhere before the final preseason game. I imagine that was part of the reason they released Pears at this point.
The team also made a pair of trades. They announced a deal of Kenneth Acker to the Kansas City Chiefs for a draft pick that is being reported as a 2018 7th rounder. There are also numerous reports, unconfirmed by the team, that they have dealt OG Brandon Thomas to the Detroit Lions for Jeremey Kerley.
Finally, the team placed Eric Rogers on injured reserve. There is thought they would do the same thing to DeAndre Smelter, but he was reportedly back at practice on Sunday, so fingers crossed he is able to get on the field this week and show something against the Chargers.
Here is where things stand for now. I'll continue crossing out players as they are removed from the roster.
