The Buffalo Bills are set to announce Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott as the team’s next head coach. Multiple reports from local and national media confirmed what was appearing likely last night.
The decision to hire McDermott leaves the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams, and San Diego Chargers as the final three teams still looking for a head coach. Bills interim head coach Anthony Lynn did not get the Bills job, and interviewed for all three of the remaining jobs. He is one of the less experienced candidates, but he is getting some love in the process.
Shortly before word of the Bills decision, NFL Network reporter Mike Silver tweeted he did not believe the Rams and 49ers were “extremely close” to making their final decision.
I don't believe the Rams or 49ers are extremely close to hiring a coach. Each is down to 3-4 candidates with whom they feel comfortable.

There was a report Wednesday morning that the Rams were bringing back Washington OC Sean McVay for a follow-up interview. That was followed by a report the team would bring back three or four candidates for a follow-up interview. Silver’s report would seem to jive with that to some extent.
