Tuesday morning we wrote that Peter Schrager was reporting the San Francisco 49ers would have interest in Washington offensive coordinator Sean McVay. Now it appears they have formally set something up. National media are reporting the 49ers have requested permission to interview McVay, and Ian Rapoport specifically is reporting the team will interview McVay on Monday.
McVay is only 30 years old (turns 31 this month), but he already has nine years of coaching experience. Aside from one year (2009) coaching tight ends in the UFL, he has worked his way up quickly through the NFL ranks. He joined Mike Shanahan and Kyle Shanahan in Washington coaching tight ends starting in 2011. When Jay Gruden took over in 2014, he promoted McVay to offensive coordinator. It is a Gruden offense, but McVay has received a lot of praise from Washington players for his involvement.
The 49ers pool of interview candidates now includes McVay, Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, Bills OC/interim HC Anthony Lynn, Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan, and Dolphins DC Vance Joseph.
