It would be nice to draft a shiny new quarterback of the future in the first round of the draft but is that the right choice? Chances are very likely that Shanahan and Lynch will get one chance to pick a quarterback in the first found of a draft during their careers with the 49ers and there is a very good chance that their success or lack of success will be defined by that choice. Do they really need to make that choice this year or would it be better to wait?
I am in no way referring to whether the draft class is going to be better next year. I am talking about whether Shanahan and Lynch are comfortable with making that choice so quickly? Many general managers have made the mistake of going after their franchise quarterback before they were truly ready to make that decision. I have no problem with Shanahan picking a quarterback in the first round if he feels that strongly about a certain quarterback but I can’t see drafting one in the first round unless he is absolutely convinced.
I just am not sure it is a good idea to draft a quarterback before you have begun to create an identity for your offense. Make that first round pick count Kyle. We are depending on you.
Anyway, hopefully I will find time to put together some facts on this, but until then, have fun with this morning’s sizzling hot links.
