Joe Mixon is still in the Mix

Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

Fooch's note: Daniel Jeremiah tweeted that GMs and scouts think Mixon goes in the second round. I was going to write about it, but this is a solid post for discussion. I personally want nothing to do with him (recognizing that I am likely rooting for some awful individuals already), but I know opinions differ.

Let me start this post by saying in my opinion what Joe Mixon did was reprehensible, and for those fans who say they wouldn't touch Mixon with a ten-foot pole, I completely understand. There are others who believe Mixon has been punished and apologized and deserves a second chance, a premise I wouldn’t completely agree or disagree with. No need for me to re-hash the incident as it is well documented.

For those fans on the other side of the coin who believe that everyone deserves a second chance, I pose to you this question if Mixon is available in the second round, pick 34 to be exact how will you feel about his selection. Bolstered by an excellent showing at his pro day and his 4.43 40 time, it is completely plausible that Mixon is already gone by this time, but if he isn't at this point he would unquestionably be the best player available. At what point does performance trump his disgraced pedigree.

Mixon is arguably the most complete RB available in the draft period. The best way for me to describe his style of play is "If Fournette and McCaffery had a baby his name would be Joe". A rare combination of receiving and rushing ability, and he is easily the best blocker of the bunch. Outside of Dalvin Cook, he is the only top back who could contribute immediately on all three downs. Mixon also has to ability to contribute on special teams. From an analysis standpoint, his on-field performance and measurable align with that of Ezekiel Elliot. The major criticism of Mixon outside of his Character issues is that he is too patient, and waits too long for holes to develop. Similar to what you heard regarding Frank Gore and Le’veon bell.

Some teams have already indicated that he has been removed from their board completely which is completely understandable. Many have also indicated that because of his actions second round is much too early for him to be selected. My thought process is much simpler "You are either okay or not okay with Mixon being on the roster. If you are okay with him being on the roster, what difference does it make where he is selected"

The reality is that Mixon will be drafted and if he performs he will be celebrated, that's just the nature of the business.
