The San Francisco 49ers front office conducted a QB road trip last week, checking out Mitchell Trubisky, DeShaun Watson, and DeShone Kizer. John Lynch has been relatively quiet on other quarterbacks, but Matt Maiocco is reporting that the 49ers GM is expected to attend the Texas Tech Pro Day, where he’ll get a chance to watch Patrick Mahomes’ workout.
At his media session last week, John Lynch was asked how many quarterbacks the 49ers will visit with before the draft. Lynch laughed and said “No. You know who I’ve seen.” The team put DeShaun Watson through a private workout and will host him on an official visit. They are expected to put Mitchell Trubisky through a private workout, and we have heard plenty about their interest in DeShone Kizer.
However, we have heard nothing about Patrick Mahomes, Davis Webb, Nate Peterman, or any of the other quarterbacks. Watson, Trubisky, and Kizer are all candidates for the No. 2 pick, and there is some thought Kizer could slip to the No. 34 pick. However, Mahomes, Webb, and Peterman are all stronger candidates to be there at No. 34. Maybe this is a bit of a smokescreen to try and land one of them?
It could all be nothing. After all, real interest vs. smoke screens can be hard to suss out this time of year. I do think the 49ers walk away with at least one quarterback in the 2017 NFL Draft, but who it is and when that happens is going to remain a mystery until it actually happens.
