49ers free agents 2014: Possible options for an Anquan Boldin contract extension

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers and Anquan Boldin are reportedly negotiating a contract extension. We take a look at a possible framework for such a deal.

Earlier this week, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that Anquan Boldin and the San Francisco 49ers wanted to get a contract extension figured out. This was not a shocking revelation, but it was nice to get some details out there. A couple days later, CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reported that the two sides are negotiating a contract extension before he reaches free agency next month.

It sounds like this deal will happen sooner rather than later, but obviously it will depend on each side's expectations. I thought I would take a look at some other wide receiver contracts out there to get an idea of what Boldin and the 49ers might work out in the coming weeks.

The best scenarios I can come up with are the 2011 deal that Santana Moss signed with Washington, and the 2012 deal that Reggie Wayne signed with the Indianapolis Colts. Below, I've broken down each deal.

Reggie Wayne

Wayne signed a 3-year deal, worth $17.5 million. The deal included a $6.5 million signing bonus, and a second year roster bonus of $1 million. I believe this bonus was paid last March.

Santana Moss

Moss signed a 3-year deal, worth $12.85 million. The deal included a $5 million signing bonus, plus yearly $250,000 roster bonuses, and $100,000 workout bonuses in 2012 and 2013.

My belief is that Boldin will get a deal more in the range of Wayne's deal. Santana Moss was an impact player for Washington, but he is on the downside of his career, and was never quite the impact player Wayne or Boldin were, or still remain.

If I was the one doing the negotiating, I would seek a 3-year deal, worth $18 million, with a $6.5 million signing bonus. I believe this deal is fair for both the 49ers, and Boldin. Now, whether this is the deal that happens, I can't say for sure, but hopefully we should know soon.
