Open BCS Championship Diary
Ohio State vs. Florida
This is the big one for college football, so follow the game and talk about it here, ignore the game entirely, fill in the blank ("That Florida is in the BCS Championship Game for the 2006 season is ____."), or any combination of the three.
If I heard this right from the other room, Florida won the toss and has elected to kick. Go Buckeyes.
EDITOR'S NOTE - Certainly a worthy game to bring up to the main page. So far it's been back and forth and highly entertaining.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

We're in good shape
I don't have any special affinity for Ohio State, but I think a lot more of their players and generally don't like the football programs from Florida anyway.
Plus I think Florida was probably the 4th or 5th best team in the nation, and really do think that they swung the Championship largely because voters didn't want to see a rematch of Ohio Michigan was a joke.
Seeing them get crushed for the rest of this game would be some kind of sweet.

Of course I want to see Ohio prevail!

Wow
Any interest here in Ted Ginn, Jr with the first round pick??????
He is my bet

You know
But realistically, they'll probably grab a receiver or a CB with the pick.
Ginn is interesting. He'd make an immediate impact on special teams. I don't know much else about him except for the general hype. How's his size? Anything on emotional make-up? Is this ankle thing a fluke or does he get these kind of minor nicks and cuts regularly? He's definitely not having a great game today. Kind of have to wonder if Smith gets off a couple of those sacks if Ginn is playing (and that fumble at the end of the half, being key).

Ginn = Smith?

Halftime
I'm still picking Ohio State to come back and win, but I know longer believe that they will blow out the Gators...
College games often seriously change in the second half. I've been to enough Cal games to know that. I don't think either of these teams will get out-athleted by the other as the game wears on, but I do think you'll see Ohio State get it together and really push. There are just too many players on that team.
Man, if I'd known Fooch would jump this to the main page I wouldn't have been so pro-Ohio in the main text. But was it worth it? Totally.
Ohio love

41-14 Florida
I'm really surprised. Ohio State has just played a bad game (the tackling has been awful on defense, and with Ginn out the receivers looked extremely poor), and Florida's defense has been absolutely fantastic.
I hate to say it, too, but Troy Smith has not played a very good game. He hasn't had much to work with because of the pressure he's been under by that Florida defense and the fact he's had very few guys who resembled being open, but two things have really stuck out at me: 1) he's overthrown a lot of passes, which he just shouldn't be doing and 2) he's consistently scrambling toward his primary reciever instead of away from presure and has run himself into a couple of sacks along the way by doing it. He should know better.
What I have liked from him is he's kept his head up all game and is spending his time on the sidelines trying to get his teammates fired up. It hasn't worked very well so far, but despite his poor play he's showing himself to be a great teammate.
I've never been convinced by Chris Leak, and frankly I'm still not, but he's played a heck of a game.
And I hate the way Florida plays Tebow as a runner who throws. It's obnoxious (and his ridiculous reactions every time he touches the ball are even more obnoxious). I like the idea of two quartebacks with different styles and abilities being used in key situations (specifically the idea of getting the freshman Tebow actual game time by doing it, because I don't normally believe in any benefits to the quarterback shuffle), but it should work like the thunder and lightning of passers... not the passer and the runner. Most of Tebow's plays haven't even pretended to be throws, and I don't think he's handed the ball off a single time. It does very little to prepare him for next year and it makes him look like a complete tool (what quarteback celebrates so much about being asked to not pass the ball... it's stupid, and he looks like a moron for playing it up so much).
And that's game.
This was a huge upset. Easily the biggest upset of the year.

QBs
By NFL standards it's gimmicky, but lots of colleges have QBs who are basically gloried RBs. In fact, Nebraska also won a Nat'l Chapionship platooning a running and passing QB in 1994 -- Tommie Frazier was the runner, Brook Berringer was the passer.

Well
I've only gotten into the college game in the last four years, when I started attending Cal. Before that I was pretty strictly an NFL-ite for my football. Man, the college game is great, though.
There are some things about winning at the college level that I haven't been able to adjust to very well. A quarteback like Tebow is one of them. Using him as a short yardage rusher does nothing really to give him relevant game-time experience for next year, especially at a high profile program like that where he will be taking every snap with expectations for success. Then again... Vince Young didn't learn to throw until the end of his junior year, and he had plenty of success.
I guess I still hold a lot of the college game up to a pro mirror, because I spent so much time in one and am still learning the other. Watching Cal regularly, always with a pretty proto-typical quarteback running a pro-style offense probably has done something to keep me from getting used to these more "gimmicky" standards of college football. It still bugs me, though. Something just scratches at the back of my head, screaming and yelling that a quarterback is for throwing the ball.
I did like when Tebow lined up in the backfield and Leak was behind center. That was much better in my eyes. Just a great way to cause disruption for the defense, by lining up those kinds of threats together.

One more thing...

No, you're right
I've followed Florida's season, but I haven't had a chance to see them live until today, and the way he was being used had been getting on my nerves all game for the reasons I talk about in response to your above comment. Something about him acting like he just saved the world after converting a short yardage first down just really got under my skin. It bugs me enough that NFL players act like that after making a sack when they're down by 15...
But you're absolutely right. I should have been cutting him more slack about that. I mean, hell, he just won the National Championship. He deserved to be pretty damn excited.

complete shock
I am also quite impressed with Jarvis Moss in particular (#94, the DE for Florida). My bet is he goes pro. Boy, was he fast.
The Florida D held OSU to 79 total net yards. Unbelievable.
