49ers Best Case/Worst Case

So I was planning on throwing out my best and worst case scenario predictions for the 49ers sometime this week.  Then Bill Williamson came in and stole my best case thunder.  I never had any intention of saying the best case scenario was seeing this team in the Super Bowl.  I love the 49ers and think they have really improved, but I was not going to throw than one out there.

Of course, in looking at it now, it's not the most insane prediction.  It's a little kooky, but not full on hallucinatory.  Most of us agree this team has a chance of making the playoffs.  I don't see it as a 2 seed, but making it nonetheless.  The Bears would certainly be tough to beat, but as has been suggested, anything is possible once you get in the playoffs.  I don't think it will happen, but I won't discount any possibilities.  Look at the 1981 49ers.  Following a 6-10 campaign, they rode an awesome draft class to a 13-3 Super Bowl campaign.  I'm just saying....

Semi-realistic Worst Case Scenario
Let's get the worst case scenario over with first.  I don't consider myself a negative person, but it's certainly worth considering what could conceivably happen if all hell breaks loose.  I'd still like to keep this in the realm of reality so I'm not going to throw out every starter getting injured and so forth.  Just some things that could happen

  • Alex does not improve from last year
  • Ashley Lelie sulks his way to a useless season and Darrell Jackson hurts his foot again
  • Defenses stack the box against Frank Gore and he just barely cracks 1,000 yards.
  • The defensive line can not open up holes for the linebackers, which leads to zero pressure on opposing QBs
  • Walt Harris reverts to the mean and realizes he's just an ok cornerback...not a Pro Bowler
  • Vernon Davis gets benched after repeatedly getting 15 yard celebration penalties.  He goes into counseling with T.O.

Obviously some exaggerations, but you get the point.  In this case, the team finishes a miserable 5-11 campaign.  I think there is too much talent for the worst case to be completely miserable, but it would certainly feel like it.  Of course, I also think the worst case scenario has a slim chance of happening because I just don't see Mike Nolan allowing such circumstances to pass.

Semi-Realistic Best Case Scenario
So on to the rosy side of things.  I'd love to predict a Super Bowl appearance but I'll be a little more realistic (It's my curse).

  • Alex Smith steps up with 25-30 touchdowns and only 10 INTs.
  • Frank Gore breaks his own franchise rushing record and leads the NFC in rushing.
  • Darrell Jackson and Ashley Lelie combine with Arnaz Battle and Vernon Davis to form a lethal receiving corp that creates a variety of mismatches.
  • Aubrayo Franklin proves to be the missing link in the 3-4, as the linebackers are able to find holes to pressure the QB
  • Patrick Willis wins defensive rookie of the year.
  • Manny Lawson finishes with 10 sacks and makes the Pro Bowl.
  • In the playoffs against the Cowboys, Vernon Davis scores a touchdown and proceeds to slam the football on Dallas star at midfield.  T.O. is not amused.

The result of this little scenario?  A 10-6 record and the first division crown since 2002.  The team advances to the Division Championship round before losing to the Bears at Soldier Field by 10 points.

Now obviously I'm pulling a lot of this out of my ass.  I think it's reasonable to assume the team falls somewhere in the middle and contends for a playoff spot.  I would love to see this team make the playoffs, but I also realize the reality of the situation.  It's tough to show restraint and not just want it all to happen immediately.  This team has its work cut out for it, but the talent is finally in place to build towards a return to the playoffs.  Not making the playoffs would definitely be disappointing, but not heartbreaking.

All that matters right now is football starts on Monday Night for the 49ers and I am most definitely ready for some football.

I love your semi best scenario
Just wanted to say I am praying for your semi scenario to become a reality! I am just waiting for our team to finally breakout and reclaim the proud franchise superiority! I hate to say this, but the season rest on the shoulders of Alex Smith. If he can produce decent numbers we will be in the hunt; however, if not it will be a very long season. Do not get me wrong I love the kid, but NFL and its fans do not have patience especially for a 1st round draft pick. Thanks for the great blog post.

Thanks
Personally, I think Alex Smith doesn't have to be huge for the team to be a contender in the division.  There needs to be improvement, but incremental would be more than enough in my opinion.  Maybe get up to 20 TDs and down to closer to 10 INTs.  A good year, not a great year....Not that I wouldn't take a great year!

my two scenarios...
worst case scenario:
frank gore gets hurt early in the season and misses significant playing time. consequently the offense ends up being mediocre. the 49ers end up losing a bunch of close games and finish the season with only around 5 to 6 wins.

best case scenario:
alex smith improves. the defense improves. and frank gore has another awesome season. the 49ers win the division, win a playoff game or two and then make it to the NFC championship game, but lose and end up one game shy of the super bowl.

i could see either one of those happening but thats on the extreme end of things for both. instead, i think the niners will win around 9-10 games; could make the playoffs if they do then i think it would be in the wild card round and maybe win a playoff game. that i think is a very likely outcome to the season.

Predicting football
The funny thing is that it's almost impossible to predict how an NFL team will do, although every week people put up their money because they think they can.

A couple of bounces of the ball can put a mediocre team into the playoffs or keep a great team out. Because teams have such big rosters, and backups play such a large part, and because rosters turn over so much, it's harder to judge a team's talent versus other sports like baseball or basketball. And careers can be much shorter. Someone can be, say, a great defensive back for two or three years and by the time the average fan notices him his career is already on the slide. Coaching and teamplay is so much more important in football than other sports, and a great offensive lineman can look like a fool if the guy next to him doesn't do his job, or if the blocking scheme is off. A defensive back who can cover a receiver for a fraction of a second longer can give a blitzing linebacker a sack, and a defensive end that can't open up the other team's O-line can make a cornerback look terrible. On TV the camera may never show where the game is won or lost. And most of what happens in practice is unknown to the fan. As much as we study the game, we still don't know.

So a lot of what we fans predict is a mixture of hope and despair. We want something great to happen, we fear it won't, and we don't have enough information to make a decent prediction. That's why gamblers love us.

I think that the Niners will get nine, maybe ten wins this year, but what can I base it on? Our roster? Alex Smith's work in the weight room last winter? What the coach says in interviews? The Rams from last year? How I think the new coaching staff in Arizona will respond? The Seahawks' reputation over the last couple of years? How do you weigh the drafts of one team over another, especially since a knee injury in week one could make a great draft a lousy one?

I have a couple of premonitions: I think the Niners will be noticably better, and probably will be in the playoffs. I think that the Cardinals' O-line is still bad and I believe E. James will get old this year. I think the Niners' defense will eventually be a lot better this year, and I think the offense will be much better. I have a feeling that the Steelers will be a lot weaker this year, the Giants are going to fall apart. The Colts will lose at least three more games this year. The Chargers will lose a couple more games than last year (and it will all be blamed on Norvell). The Bears will regret sticking with Grossman and trading their great running back. The Saints' defense will deteriorate and their offense won't be able to compensate for it. The Bucs will step up a little.

Who knows if any of this stuff will happen?

I think making predictions gives each person a sense of control over the scary future. That's why most of us believe in heaven although reports from those who've already gotten there have been sketchy at best. It's the excitement we all feel in our guts before every game. Go Niners!

The schedule
We start the season with 7 of our 8 or 9 toughest games.

 Mon 9/10  Arizona  10:15 pm
Sun 9/16  at St. Louis  1:00 pm
Sun 9/23  at Pittsburgh  1:00 pm
 Sun 9/30  Seattle  4:05 pm
 Sun 10/7  Baltimore  4:15 pm
   bye
Sun 10/21  at NY Giants  1:00 pm
Sun 10/28  New Orleans  4:15 pm

If we can go  3-4 or 4-3 after these 7, I like our chances to win 10 games this year.

Arizona
I still think Arizona is gonna be a tough game.  I really think this is the year (as many have said in the past:))...We'll see how it works out but I think the West will be very tight by the end of the year.  Maybe 10-6, 9-7, 9-7, 8-8 or something like that.

Just think
how awesome it would be to come out of this at 5-2, 6-1, or better!

here are mine
best case scenario: go 16-0.  shutout 2 playoff opponents.  win super bowl.

worst case scenario: 0-16.  all the good young players have career ending injuries.

my prediction: something in the middle.

Roster move.
The 49ers are expected to announce a couple of roster moves soon.  The 49ers are supposedly pulling Atiyyah Ellison from the Raven's practice squad, but in order to do that, someone from the 53-man roster needs to be moved.

It'll be interesting to see who gets moved to make room.  My guess is that it'll be Navies, Strickland or Brown.

There is always the possibility that the team has found a suitor for Harris or Smiley in exchange for a draft pick.  It's a very slim chance, but it exists nevertheless!

Wayyy off.
I was way off on my "prediction".  The 49ers chose to cut Patrick Estes in favor of Atiyyah Ellison.  Estes, according to Maiocco, isn't practice squad eligible, so unless he doesn't latch on anywhere else, this could be the end of his 49ers' career.

Playoffs, statistically speaking
Football Outsiders, the statistician football freaks who I've only recently started relying on for analysis, predict the 9ers will win the west.  Here are their predictions.  (For the whole article, see below.)

West       Division      Playoffs    Wins    StDev
SF       40.3%      60.5%    8.3    1.42
SEA       35.2%      52.8%    8.0    0.96
ARI       14.7%      20.9%    6.2    3.30
STL       9.8%      15.2%    5.9    2.75

This is actually much more heartening than hearing some knucklehead at MSNBC take the 9ers in the Superbowl.  FO are objective and realistic analysts.  They have the team rated as the 15th best in the league with the easiest schedule.  Although I'm a little surprised that the defense is ranked as high as it is.

I really hope
that the 8.3 predicted wins comes true.

actually that's pretty nice to see.  looks like it's gonna be a tight race with everyone just above or below .500.  Hopefully we'll have more like 11 wins but hey, I'll take playoffs.

Kaufman chooses Niners
King Kaufman, who covers sports for Salon.com, hates the Niners, roots openly for the Rams, and says that the Niners will win the NFC West this year.

Time for Vernon Davis to start opening up the middle with big-time pass receptions, or Delanie Walker will do it. Time for Alex Smith to step up. What did the Chambers Brothers sing? Time has come today.

I keep
waffling, and flip flopping, and rolling over, and so on in that manner for while...

I really want to throw myself on this thing full bore, call for a 12 win season, Arnaz Battle offensive player of the year, homefield advantage and all that that entails...

But I have a really hard time thinking of this team in the Super Bowl. It just doesn't remind me of the Super Bowl - or even the deep playoff - teams that I remember, that I expected to be in these major games. Granted, those teams were unbelievably good... but I'd like to have something approaching that kind of confidence before I start singing for the Big Show...

I'd almost not have the Niners in it than have them in it and just overmatched...

So I keep jumping on that wagon and then falling off. I think I'll make my final call to stay off. Playoffs, yes. Much farther, no. Best case. Assuming everything comes together and each of these guys plays the way we believe they can.

Worst case? Barry Zito gets a nasty case of Armpendicitis, and has to have his armpendix removed. Never pitches again. Owed 300 million dollars because of the ridiculous armpendicitis clause in his contract. The 49ers have to help pay it off, and work the next five years with 20 million less on the cap than everybody else. The wheels fall off. Alex Smith explodes. Frank Gore retires. Kwame Harris inherits team when John York very cleverly fakes his own death and, for laughs, puts Harris in the will.

Yeah. That would be about as bad as it can get.

wow
Zito's been good lately.  Didn't think you'd have ol' "albatross" infecting the niners also.  It's bad enough as it is.

Your waffling
It reminds me of Eastwood's character in Million Dollar Baby.  "Just two or three more fights, and you'll be ready."  I guess the difference here is that the current 49ers haven't gone through any "fights" yet, so I see what you're saying.

I just think it's fun to think this team will take it to the house.
