49ers-Cardinals: Final Injury Report
It's Saturday late morning, a little over 24 hours until kickoff. I consider this a little bit of final housecleaning before the game. We've got the final injury report and it definitely favors the 49ers. Prior to yesterday the injury reports only list how mcuh a person participated in practice. Yesterday we discussed the particular situations and their possible impacts on the game.
Since then, both teams submitted their final injury reports and we can make a few more deductions.
49ers Injury Report
Probable
DT Aubrayo Franklin - Knee
OLB Parys Haralson - Shoulder
SS Michael Lewis - Back
TE Delanie Walker - Calf
EDITOR'S ADDITION (per AndYourBirdCanSing): Alex Smith (Doutbful - Shoulder)
Michael Lewis was a late addition as he didn't practice on Friday. According to Maiocco,
Lewis spent the entire practice anxiously pacing back and forth along the sideline, tossing a ball to himself. He is listed as probable on the injury report, indicating a strong likelihood that he will be available to play.
I'm trying to remember the last time a Probably individual did not play. Last year Tom Brady was questionable for a chunk of the season and didn't miss so much as a snap. While a guy like Franklin has struggled, I still want him out on the field simply because of the depth he brings to the team on the defensive line. I sense a lot of rotation of bodies on the line and the more bodies available, the better.
EDITOR'S NOTE 2:05PM - Also, thanks to AndYourBirdCanSing for pointing to the article about Alex Smith's injury. Smith is now listed as Doubtful and Shaun Hill will be the primary backup. I'm guessing Arnaz Battle or Michael Robinson becomes the ermergency QB.
Cardinals Injury Report
Probable
TE Ben Patrick
OT Mike Gandy
Questionable
TE Jerame Tuman
Doubtful
C Al Johnson
DT Gabe Watson
DT Alan Branch
Doubtful indicates at least a 75% chance that a player will NOT be playing in the game. Missing two key cogs on the defensive line would certainly not be a good thing for the Cardinals. If the 49ers offensive line is in fact improved from last season, the running game could have a field day and O'Sullivan could have quality time in the pocket. Of course, those are big ifs.
On the offensive side of the ball, if Al Johnson doesn't play I'll definitely be paying attention to the QB-center exchange. Even with a full week of practice, the QB-center exchange can be tricky. It should make for an interesting situation come Sunday.
While I'm sure plenty of injuries will crop up, I have to say it's definitely nice to have a light injury report for now. The 49ers had some injury issues during training camp, but all in all it wasn't too bad. It hurt missing most of the receivers, but they're all healthy at the time that matters most. Hopefully they stay that way.

49ers-Cardinals Injury Update
We now stand a little less than 60 hours from kickoff and I'm sure everybody is getting pretty amped up. I realized recently that while we've looked at the various pieces of the 49ers team, we haven't really done one big look at everything as a whole. While each piece is important, they're all part of one big puzzle. Later today I'll have a more general look at the team and open things up for final predictions for the season. In the meantime, the injury report is clearing up a bit and there is plenty of room for observation. Also, thank to the 49ers I'm able to get a peak at the transcripts of Mike Nolan's daily press conferences. Any mentions of Nolan comments are attributed to that, as opposed to when I would previously quote from Barrows or Maiocco.
49ers Injuries
On the 49ers side, things are looking decent (knock on multiple pieces of wood). Aubrayo Franklin and Parys Haralson were limited earlier this week, but both were able to fully compete in practice yesterday. I'd say that removes them from game-day decision consideration. It's nice to have your entire defense on the field and growing acclimated to each other. If you know exactly who will be where, things are simpler for the rest of the defens and you can let your instincts kick in.
The only other face on the injury report is Delanie Walker, who had a sore calf and sat out practice yesterday, but is expected to return today. The comment of the day goes to Mike Nolan, "He's got a calf [injury]. He should practice tomorrow. He's got two calves, one is sore." For some reason that last line cracked me up. Yes, Dr. Mike, your tight end has two calves. Maybe it's just me.
Finally, in somewhat related news, Coach Nolan indicated that Adam Snyder would start at left guard and Tony Wragge would start at right guard. David Baas will be coming off the bench behind both Wragge and Snyder. Nolan indicated that Baas is still a bit rusty considering the long layoff he had with the injury. Since I wouldn't expect rotation on the offensive line, I'm really curious to see how, or even if, they work Baas back into the starting lineup. Maybe he just got Wally Pipped?
Cardinals Injuries
On the Cardinals side, things are not so rosy. Starting center Al Johnson and backup defensive tackle Alan Branch did not practice at all for the second straight day. Starting defensive tackle Gabe Watson and backup tight ends Ben Patrick and Jerame Tuman were limited in practice (although it's not known to what extent). Additionally, starting left tackle Mike Gandy took part in a full workout after being limited earlier in the week.
So what does all that mean? If their starting center is out they'll be rolling out a third year backup, Lyle Sendlein. His scouting report indicates he's a bit undersized and might get tossed around by the bigger nose tackles in the league. Of course, considering the struggles of Aubrayo Franklin, that won't be as big an issue. However, a backup smaller center could help Franklin establish position and open gaps for Bamm Bamm and Ulbrich/Spikes. Either way, if it is a backup center playing, I'd really hope the 49ers bring heat up the middle as often as possible to test the youngster.
If Branch and Watson are hurting, that certainly softens up the middle of the Cardinals defensive line. We'll obviously get a heavy dose of Frank Gore no matter who is playing. However, if the interior of the defensive line is banged up, it's just one more area to cull an advantage. While it's certainly possible J.T. O'Sullivan opens up a crazy air attack, I think it's safer to bet on the 49ers running game carrying them to any victories. Any advantage for Frank Gore is good advantage for Frank Gore.
When I was emailing back and forth with cgolden over at Revenge of the Birds, I inquired about the tight end situation in Arizona, since I'd imagine Manny Lawson would be drawing much of that assignment. He said that even if Patrick and company were completely healthy, they are not much of a threat. If Patrick and Truman are hurting, we'll get a big dose of Leonard Pope. Nothing to write home about.

Taking a stroll around the NFC West
One thing I often forget to do while posting is assessing what our divisional competition is up to. Obviously we'll do preview stuff the week of games, but considering we play 6 out of 16 games against 3 teams, it's a good idea to keep an eye on them so we have some idea as to what to expect. Every team in the NFL has some sort of question mark to address in training camp and it'd be nice to know what that is for the rest of the NFC West.
Arizona Cardinals
The Anquan Boldin situation has been the biggest national story out of Cardinals camp. However, now it appears as if the Drew Rosenhaus client might be backing down a little bit. I have to say that whether you like Rosenhaus or not, his clients report to camp even when unhappy. He worked out an extension for Gore so that certainly makes me a slightly bigger fan.
Aside from Boldin, the offensive line seems to be turning into a bit of an issue. Their starting center, Al Johnson, is having issues with his knee. It seems like going back several years, the Cardinals have never been able to fully address their offensive line issue. Right now, it might be safe to say that they have the worst offensive line in the division if you factor in starters and depth. As long as the offensive line lacks depth, I'd imagine Edgerrin James will not get completely on track and Leinart will have his work cut out for him. James finished with 1,222 rushing yards, but only averaged 3.8 a carr, good for 37th in the league.
St. Louis Rams
So, if Dante Hall is leading the way in becoming your #3 receiver, is that a good or bad thing? I was surprised to see he's only 29, but it feels like he's been around forever. He'll get a chance to solidify his #3 role as rookie Donnie Avery has suffered a small stress fracture in his hip. Avery will apparently miss anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. That's certainly not the best way for a rookie receiver to make his mark in camp.
In spite of all the injuries, the biggest national story from Rams camp is the Steven Jackson holdout. If they can come to terms on a deal I don't think the missed time will be too detrimental. The good news for the Rams is that they have leverage on their side. According to the recently voided CBA (which applies to this case), "a player shall not receive an Accrued Season for any League Year in which the player is under contract to a Club and in which he failed to report to such Club at least thirty days prior to the first regular season game of that season.” So that means Jackson has to report to camp a week by next Friday or he loses a year of service time. No leverage means Jackson will likely blink first.
Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks big news (in my mind) is the signing of former 49er great Bryan Gilmore! Really, what else needs to be said about that, right? The Seahawks have some solid, if unsung receivers. If former Super Bowl MVP Deion Branch can stay healthy they'll be even better. Of course, can 35 year old Bobby Engram repeat his 94 reception season, 3 more than he had the previous 2 seasons combined?
Elsewhere, the Seahawks are excited about the performance of rookie defensive tackle Red Bryant, a fourth round pick. He had some character issues coming out of school which seemed to contribute a little to his drop.
Now that we've got a Cardinals blogger, the NFC West is complete at SB Nation. We're looking for ways to cross-blog and keep everybody completely informed on the division. If you have any suggestions for interaction between the blogs, please let me know.
