49ers Rookies
A.J Jenkins "Other" Nickname Revealed At NFLPA Rookie Premiere Event
This weekend, the NFLPA is hosting a rookie event called NFLPA Rookie Premiere. Later in the summer the players will go through the rookie symposium, but this event is more of a chance to get the players' names out there and get them some quality publicity.
The weekend features a host of events ranging from the annual photo shoot for football cards, to events with youth around the area. Earlier today, SB Nation shot some video that featured some of the rookies, and our own A.J. Jenkins.
Amy K. Nelson and Dan Rubenstein were on hand for a youth football event that featured some of the rookies, and it seems like A.J. Jenkins really stood out. In looking over the video, it is kinda crazy how old Brandon Weeden looks. He's 28 years old, but really he looks like he's about 35.
The Jenkins part of the video shows some quality personality from the rookie receiver. In the post-draft press conference we learned one nickname he has is ET, because of his long fingers. However, Jenkins revealed a nickname from college, "Stinky." He said that at times he was referred to as Stinkin' Jenkins due to the fear he put in defensive backs. And I may never think of the word "boo-boo" the same after watching this.
Kourtnei Brown Scouting Report According To Clemson Bloggers
Earlier this week, word came out that 49ers rookie linebacker Darius Fleming tore his ACL, potentially ending his season before it even begins. The 49ers drafted Fleming and Cam Johnson in hopes of developing some depth behind Ahmad Brooks, Aldon Smith and Parys Haralson. The loss of Fleming places Johnson in firm position to secure a roster spot, and potentially make significant contributions in the 49ers pass rush rotation.
Following the draft, the 49ers signed undrafted rookie free agent Kourtnei Brown. The former Clemson linebacker will get some reps at outside linebacker after a senior season in which he registered 25 tackles, 2.0 sacks, 4 TFLs, 1 INT and 1 FR. One of his biggest highlights from college was returning both the interception and fumble for touchdowns.
There's not a whole lot of scouting reports or video on Brown, so I got in touch with Shakin' The Southland, our Clemson blog. They passed along a position analysis post from February in which they broke down their defensive line's performance in 2011. Brown played defensive end for the Tigers, but will move to outside linebacker in the NFL.
Be Like Mike: Breakdown of Andrew Iupati, Trying Out for the 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers have brought in a plethora of talent and added many new names this offseason between the draft and free agency. Some of the names like LaMichael James and Randy Moss are familiar because of what they've done on the gridiron. But one of the names was familiar for a whole other reason.
Humboldt State University's Andrew Iupati will be working out with San Francisco, trying to make the very same team for which his brother Mike Iupati starts. Some families just mesh with football; take a look at the Matthews family, the Manning family, the Harbaugh family and recently the Pouncey's have gotten in on the action.
Like his brother Mike, Andrew is a big physical guy with a very similar approach to the game of football. In this piece, we will break down defensive tackle Andrew Iupati and where he stands with the San Francisco 49ers.
49ers Rookie Minicamp: Newcomers Off To Rough Start
The San Francisco 49ers opened their rookie minicamp today and it sounds like things did not get off to a particularly good start for many of the newcomers.
Jim Harbaugh definitely wasn't impressed by the stamina of his rookies. Many, including 1st-rounder A.J. Jenkins, were flagging by mid session

Jenkins spoke with the media briefly after practice and indicated the pace and speed of the 49ers camp was sufficiently different from his own personal workouts. It is waaaaaay too early to take much of anything from this. I would be curious to know how the 49ers workouts compare to workouts around the league. Additionally, I'd be curious how many rookies struggle when they report to the post-draft minicamp.
It's certainly not about making excuses for any of the rookies since they knew this weekend was coming, but it's still something to keep an eye on as we move forward. Hopefully this is just an initial issue and will get the rookies heads on straight as offseason activities continue.
Joe Looney To Be Limited In 49ers Rookie Minicamp
49ers rookie guard Joe Looney is officially under contract and in town for the 49ers rookie minicamp. He took a few minutes to chat with the 49ers media yesterday and provided a few details we might not otherwise get from the normally secretive coaching staff.
The most pertinent news is that he has not yet been cleared for full football activities. Looney suffered a Lisfranc injury in the Senior Bowl. It is a significant injury, with the potential long-term implications anywhere from getting back to 100% to ending careers. Looney is doing running and jumping and other non-football exercises that test the foot, but the full status of his recovery will not be known until he is taking part in full football activities. It sounds like he will be cleared for that in June, so we'll just have to wait and see.
Looney comes into camp with a bit of an edge on some offensive line draft picks thanks to his work with former 49ers center Jeremy Newberry. Looney had a chance to work with Newberry in January because Newberry works for the company that represents Looney, Octagon Football. Newberry liked what he saw in Looney and as Newberry pointed out, Looney comes across very well-spoken and engaging in the interview after the jump.
49ers Sign Six Of Seven Draft Picks
The 49ers officially announced the signings of six of their seven draft picks. A.J. Jenkins is the only unsigned pick, but he is in town and has reportedly indicated he will sign an injury waiver while a deal is getting worked out. I can't find the link, but I recall reading yesterday somewhere that the Jets went above slot with the 30th pick last year and that might impact the 49ers deal this year. I'm not positive about that, but that might slow down the signing. Of course, even still, the deal should get done with little trouble under the new rookie cap.
The rookies are in town this weekend for their own minicamp, at which veterans are not allowed. Once that wraps, a few of the rookies can stick around for upcoming offseason workouts, but others will have to wait until the end of their respective academic calendars.
49ers Agree To Contract With Trenton Robinson, Darius Fleming, According To Reports
Adam Caplan is reporting that the 49ers have agreed to terms on contracts with rookies Trenton Robinson and Darius Fleming. Along with the reported signing of Jason Slowey, this gives the 49ers three draft picks locked up heading into rookie minicamp this weekend. Wide receiver AJ Jenkins is flying out to the Bay Area today and has indicated he will sign an injury waiver for this weekend if he does not have a contract in place.
Both Robinson and Fleming will get a chance to earn their keep on special teams in 2012, but both have an opportunity to work their way into some rotational work on the defense. Robinson is coming in as a safety, but the team believes he can also work as a cornerback. His best chance for any extensive defensive playing time would be as a safety, given the limited depth at the position.
Fleming will battle with Cam Johnson and Parys Haralson for playing time behind Ahmad Brooks and Aldon Smith. Haralson is the grizzled veteran among those three, but if Fleming and/or Johnson can bring the necessary pass rush skills and discipline in maintaining their assignments, they could very well make Haralson expendable. It is nothing resembling a lock, but should be worth paying close attention to in August.
After the jump, I've posted the post-draft conference call transcripts for Robinson and Fleming.
Andrew Iupati To Try Out At 49ers Rookie Minicamp
The 49ers will host their rookie minicamp this weekend, and while the team has filled out their 90-man roster, they are allowed to bring in guys to "try out" with the team. The brother of a 49ers player will be taking part:
Does this last name sound familiar? Humboldt State DT Andrew Iupati will be trying out during #49ers weekend minicamp, his agent said....
— Matt Barrows (@mattbarrows) May 9, 2012
Although the 49ers have 90 players on the roster, a strong showing by a tryout player could net him a contract over one of the other UDFAs. A tryout player is a long shot heading in, but you can't make the team if you don't get a chance.
Andrew Iupati actually helped out a bit at the 49ers offseason practices last year during the lockout. Matt Maiocco had an interesting piece on junior Iupati when Mike Iupati was watching his brother as a member of Humboldt State taking on Central Washington.
On a related note, the 49ers have invited former Sacramento State QB Jeff Fleming to camp. That fills out the weekend camp roster, which previously lacked a QB.
