Alex Smith meeting James Andrews? Say It Ain't So.

While I'm not one to scream the sky is falling, ESPN is reporting some not so good news.

ESPN is reporting that Alex Smith will seek a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews (NEVER a good sign) after learning preliminary MRI results indicate a serious injury to tendons in his right shoulder:

A team source has told ESPN's Ed Werder that San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback Alex Smith is seeking a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews after preliminary MRI results indicated he appears to have suffered a serious injury to tendons in his right shoulder in Sunday's game.

If the diagnosis performed at Stanford is confirmed by Andrews, the source said that it is expected Smith would opt to have corrective surgery immediately even though he would likely miss the rest of the season.

All I can say is son-of-a-bitch. I'm not a proponent of swearing on the site, but now is as good a time as any if this is in fact true. Let's just hope Dr. Andrews has a better second opinion.

I'd say at least maybe we can get a great draft pick, but we have the Colts pick and the Patriots have ours. When it rains it pours. Let the prayer vigil begin.

Need a third quarterback. Who's out there to sign?

I just got the feeling on Sunday that it was worse than anyone was saying, what with that three-pound hunk of flesh riding him to the ground. It just looked really bad. Still, I'm watching on TV, I don't do diagnoses.

The Niners will need to pick up another quarterback. We may have to go with Dilfer for the year. I don't think Hill is going to be the man, not for the long run. Who's out there? Cody Pickett?

Here's the next question: How long does it take to heal from surgery on the tendons, and what is the prognosis? How well do quarterbacks come back from this kind of injury?

Well....

There was some criteria to make the bet valid. One of which I believe was a minimum of 100 attempted passes. Smith is currently at 84. The other being that the winning QB had to finish in the top 15 in DPAR, as I didn't want to write a eulogy if Campbell's suckitude was a hair better than Smith's suckitude. So far Campbell ranks 25th in passing DPAR, behind Trent Edwards and just in front of Kelly Holcomb. His rushing DPAR is 9th but it's not big enough to move up up more than a couple slots. So as it stands if Smith is out for the season the bet is null and void. And even if he returns Campbell has to pick things up to even qualify.

so, can someone remind me at what point we swapped picks with the Pats? If that was on draft day I was too drunk to remember. Something tells me it was when we snatched the pick that we used on Staley. Am I out of my mind?

Basically

This is what went down. We traded for one of the Pats two first round which we used for Staley. Then we traded our 2nd rounder and down in the 4th for the Colts 1st rounder next year. Too drunk by the first round? That's getting down to business.

yeah

if you weren't here for the draft day discussion, I was, um, a little inebriated. I was pretty coherent when we picked Willis but not by the time we got to Staley. At the time I was furious, I mean, FURIOUS about giving up a pick to move into the first round. Staley it turns out, looks to have been a really good pick. But what I was afraid of seems to be turning true, and that's that we're gonna have a much lower 1st round pick than we deserve this coming year.

do we really need to go out and sign a 3rd QB? Probably. But in an emergency, couldn't one of these former college QBs fill in? I mean, their arms can't be any weaker than Dilfers, can they?

False reports (surprise surprise).

ESPN reports are wrong according to Matt Maiocco. Smith is simply just going for a second opinion. Here is what that blog entry had to say:

One inaccuracy of the ESPN report is that it said Smith tore both "tendons." Call it a minor point or whatever, but he actually tore both ligaments. Smith said Monday that the MRI examination he had in the morning showed there were no other problems with the shoulder. There was no damage to the muscle fibers or to the collarbone. On Monday, he and the team said there was no plan for surgery.

Those ligaments grow back together without surgery. Of course, the writers talking to Smith are not experts on shoulders. One seemed amazed that the ligaments would reattach themselves without surgery. "So they just grow back together?" he asked Smith.

"I hope so," Smith answered, managing a smile through his obvious pain.

If that wasn't enough, the 49ers are disputing the ESPN report also. In fact, Smith isn't visiting Dr. Andrews at all. The 49ers are just sending him the lab results from the previous MRI. There are still no plans for surgery.

I hope that eases some nervousness around here.

I agree.

"Marine World" made a lot more sense, to me at least. The primary reason for my visit there (when I was younger) are the "marine" exhibits. I suppose they're trying to shake any kind of stereotype those exhibits may produce (i.e. they don't focus on rides or other animals). Or maybe they just didn't want to sound like an imposter "Sea World".

IMHO

It was only good when it was Marine World Africa USA.

Once Six Flags got a hold of it it went downhill very very quickly. If they could ever get a hold of the fairgrounds it might become a really cool park, but right now it's a bunch of small crappy rides packed together like a meat grinder.

But also, I was just bitter when Six Flags came in, so any excuse for me to hate on it is welcome as far as I'm concerned.
