Week 5 Prediction Games

Alright folks, no rest for the weary when it comes to the Prediction Game...even though my picks have been miserably awful. On to the Week 5 matchups:

Baltimore @ San Francisco - Sunday 1:15pmPST/4:15PpmEST

Dallas @ Buffalo - Monday 5:30pmPST/8:30pmEST

Chicago @ Green Bay - Sunday 5:15pmPST/8:15pmEST

Tampa Bay @ Indianapolis - Sunday 1:05pmPST/4:05pmEST

Seattle @ Pittsburgh - Sunday 10:00amPST/1:00pmEST

Detroit @ Washington - Sunday 10:00amPST/1:00pmEST

We've got decent matchups this week. Tampa Bay can try and prove they belong with the better teams in the league. Detroit looks to continue their surprisingly strong start. And of course, the Trent Dilfer era begins in San Francisco.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

My thoughts...
Anyone who doesn't predict the Niners to win every week should be banned from these games.  Because if you care more about winning this game than maintaining your Niner pride, no matter how bad we may be, then you are simply doing it wrong.

49ers
I agree but figure some people are ultra competitive. I am competitive when there is money on the line, but will still pick the 49ers every single week!

My Brotha from anotha Motha...
Sorry for the internet ebonix but you and me see eye to eye on this.

I am as competitive as they come.  But no prediction game will ever get me to favor any team over SF.  You tell me we are playing NE next week and I say we win 24-23.  I just don't care enough about the prediction game to ever not pick the Niners.

It is not like I look down on anyone who doesn't look at it the same way.  I appreciate every Niner fan and the way they choose to show support of our beloved team.  It's just that football is so much different to me than every other sport.  There are only 16 games.  Each step of the way has that much more significance relative to each game in every other sport.

I can watch the Giants (baseball) and know they are going to lose, and still find enjoyment in the different nuances of the game.  Pretty much the only time I don't find enjoyment is when Matt Cain gets an L.

But when it comes to football, I feel like the Niners always have a chance to win, no matter how many signs may point in the other direction, no matter if we are top-dog or underdog.

We aren't asked to predict the Niners' game every week, but when we are, they are always going to win...it is just a matter of by how much.

It's called being a realist
If the Niners played the Patriots right now it's likely we'd lose by 21+.

by methodrampage on Oct 4, 2007 7:36 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Spare me the realist BS...
I'm not living in some fantasy land.

The reason why we barely won our first two games, and why we lost our last two falls primarily on our offensive line.  It goes deeper, all the way to the coaches, their playcalling, their OL schemes.  If our offensive line was where it should be from day 1, then we are 4-0.  Or at least 3-1, but dominating in each win.

If that isn't the reality that you see, then maybe YOU aren't being realistic.

Our defense has carried us thus far this year.  And they can do even better if we don't force them to play 40min of each game.

The reason why you would say the Pats would win by 21 is because of how you view them on paper.  And most of the country would echo that view.  But on any given sunday they could get beaten too. This is why no team has gone undefeated since the famous Dolphins of 197-whatever.  And maybe if our team was closer to what they can be on paper, then you might be singing a different tune.  The Pats are beatable.  It just requires playcalling and execution at every end of the game.

When it comes to the Niners, we haven't lost until the game is over.  I'll admit, it would be less likely that we would win against the Pats relative to other teams.  But until it has actually gone down, your "realistic" view is nothing more than your opinion.  It is a prediction based on your opinions.  And when it comes to prediction games, I will NEVER pick the Niners to lose, no matter how likely it may be that they will.  That is just a part of what I already called my Niner-pride.  If you choose to support the Niners a different way then kudos to you.

by BawLa on Oct 4, 2007 12:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

What is your point exactly?
That my "realistic" opinion makes me less of a 49er fan than your overly-and-unjustly-optimistic opinion?

I see our defense being vastly improved from a season ago.  But what I don't see is our defense winning any games for us and that won't change until they start scoring multiple touchdowns per game, until then our defense will merely keep us in games.  As in case you didn't know you have to score points to win games.  We're averaging 14 pts. a game it will be impossible to win every game with that kind of offensive production, no matter how good your defense is.  The Bears last year, who you might recognize from the Super Bowl, gave up an average of 16 pts. a game.

Through 4 weeks this team hasn't shown me anything that leads me to believe that without a doubt they should win any game left on the schedule, less the Rams in their current state.  Our wins look like flukes more than anything else.

Sure any given Sunday, the Niners could win and any given Saturday I could shit a Faberge egg.  Do I think it's going to happen this Saturday?  No, but it might.  Do I think the 49ers are going to win this game on Sunday?  No.  Is that because I base my "realistic" opinion on more than blind loyalty?  Most definitely.

by methodrampage on Oct 4, 2007 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wow
You would need a heck of a lot lot of random subatomic activity to go right for that faberge egg thing to happen.... Still, it'd be pretty cool.

I did not write this
But I thought it was relevant and well said:

G.K. Chesterton once wrote, "Saying, 'My country, right or wrong' is like saying, 'My mother, drunk or sober.'" I feel the same way about the [Professional Sports Team], the books I read, the music I like, our country, my friends, my family, and myself. Blind affection means loving an imaginarily perfect construction of something, not the thing itself. We owe it to the people and things we care about to regard them honestly. We owe it to ourselves, because when we turn off our ability to think critically, that's where we get nasty surprises.

Mutually exclusive.
The issue I have with this is that the argument seems to say that loving (or caring about the team's outcome) and thinking they're going to lose are two mutually exclusive things.  They really aren't, though.

by sfgfan on Oct 4, 2007 4:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

My take
Personally, I didn't read it that way.  All the writer was saying is that you shouldn't ignore the shortcomings.  Loving your team (or whatever) is fine, just be aware of it's limitations.

His argument...
... succinctly: "Anyone who doesn't predict the Niners to win every week should be banned from these games.  Because if you care more about winning this game than maintaining your Niner pride, no matter how bad we may be, then you are simply doing it wrong."

He's basically saying people who don't pick the 49ers should be banned because they lack "pride".  He's even fought the point in subsequent comments.

You and everyone else gravely misunderstood...
And therefore misconstrued a bunch of conclusions about what I think.  You most definitely are not the only one.  I noticed a misunderstanding and that is why each subsequent post since that origial one has been much longer and therefore more precise about what I think.

My point is, the way I (and notice the key word I) choose to show MY (again pointed inward) Niner pride in THE PREDICTION GAME (lets be clear what I was originally talking about) is how I explained it.  As I have said after the original post, if you take the prediction game so seriously that you don't choose the Niners to win every week then I just disagree with that.

Absolutely nowhere did I suggest that anyone else "lacks" Niner pride.  They just have a different view of Niner pride than I do, and so therefore I included a comical statment referring to "doing it wrong".  And even when I said "doing it wrong" and meant it in a comical way, it still referred to the prediction game and not Niner pride.

When I suggested that people were "doing it wrong" it was meant to be a comic takeoff of the website.  The doing it wrong website is classic and any reference to it should be considered comical IMO.  Anyone who is not familiar with "doing it wrong" might take what I said the wrong way.  Sorry. (and maybe I shouldn't be sorry, because my initial impression of people that take things said on the internet too seriously is that they probably are "doing it wrong"...oh boy, what a can of worms) If you heard me make that statement versus reading it, you would have had zero problem from the get-go.  My bad.

Everyone that is a Niner fan has some degree of pride.  And who is anyone to judge someone for being more or less of a fan?  It is what it is for you...that is the way I feel.  But again, this whole thing was about the game and not overall pride.

Before the season started I predicted the Niners would win 10-11 games.  Yep, I'm an optimist.  But that is irrelevant.  My reasoning behind that prediction is pretty solid and well-founded.  But in this prediction game, I have and always will pick the Niners to win.  EVERY GAME.  Because I don't care enough about winning the game to not pick the Niners.  If you do, more power to you.  Play the game however you want, I still think you are doing it wrong.  Just don't think that I am saying you or anyone else do not have Niner pride if you pick them to lose in the prediction game.

If I knew anything about blogging...
Then I would've included it myself.  But I'm a blog noob.  (you can all point and laugh at the blog noob)

I would've picked one that said "you're doing it wrong" just to be clear.

"all aboard the failboat" is one of my favorite ones, but it really had no context in the situation.

I should be more clear in my writing and then I won't get into trouble.

So, how is that fabrige egg coming?

by BawLa on Oct 5, 2007 12:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I respectfully disagree
I think it's possible to have Niner pride and still think they are going to lose.  I'll still root my ass off for them and be ecstatic if they win, because I care a lot more about the Niners winning than about me winning this competition.  But to me there's no sense in picking them if I don't believe it will come true.
Bring back the classic Uni's!

by wjackalope on Oct 3, 2007 10:51 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I totally agree with this.
It is COMPLETELY possible to root for a team and know they'll lose.  What, do you honestly believe the team will win all 16 games?  Or to make it fit the rest of this season, do you really think they'll win the last 12 games?

Even if I pick against the 49ers (which I probably will this week), I'm still going to root for them.  My ass will still be planted in front of the TV for at least three hours (not counting any pre-game shenanigans) watching every snap, comment, and response to the game.  As wjackalope would, I would be totally ecstatic if the 49ers pull out a win.  I am every week.  Regardless of how I think the game will turn out, a 49ers win will make me totally happy.  Likewise, regardless of how I think the game will turn out, a 49ers loss will still bum me out.

The contest has nothing to do with fan-dome.  I'm probably going to be picking the Patriots every game, but I am by no means a Patriots fan (though I am a very big fan of their front office and coaching).

Low-scoring affair
I could definitely see it being a low-scoring affair.  I just think that the game is lost because the 49ers offense is doing terribly right now, and the defense won't be able to carry them the whole game.  Take away a few untimely mistakes last weekend, and the Ravens probably would have won.  McNair threw for 300+ yards, but his one interception set up a 78-yard score to Braylon Edwards.  Willis MaGahee also had 100 yards rushing.

Not saying that the Browns defense compares to the 49ers, but over the course of the game (and all of the offense' three and outs), the 49ers defense will wear down.  I'm not calling for a blowout, but a 10 point margin wouldn't surprise me one bit.

The Niners are banged up, the Ravens are even more banged up, someone has to win right? Why not us? Niners win in an ugly game where the viewers are the real losers. Brett Favre almost always beats the Bears. Indy wont lose for awhile. Steelers win, Niners move into tie for first. I dont know why, but I like Detroit right now, good sleeper team. GO NINERS!!!
