Feel free to enter your predictions HERE

I have a feeling this could be the lowest scoring game of the day. In fact, the over/under is lower than any other game, which shows the bookies are thinking the same thing. I think the Ravens injury report is a little deceptive. I don't think Todd Heap has ever NOT been on the injury report and Steve McNair is perpetually probable/questionable. However, they're certainly banged up and it would definitely be a plus to not have Jonathan Ogden on the field, even as he's getting older.

So it's been said all week, but I'll just make the point one last time. The offensive line REALLY needs to step up this week. Trent Dilfer is not quite as fleet of foot as he's never been. Let's just hope he doesn't get stuck in quick sand like he did last week. If he can just get a little time to throw and they can get Gore going, this is a very winnable game. Let's all think happy thoughts and take care of business.

GO NINERS!

A shutout

Reggie Bush
I loved watching him in college and do root for him as a pro.  However, he's looking more and more like a glorified Terry Kirby.   Like Kirby, he has flashes of success with the run but seems more suited for use in the passing game.   My two cents.

by DraftQBin2008 on Oct 7, 2007 12:30 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think
he'll still turn out to be pretty valuable in one way or another, but maybe Houston was right that he wasn't worth the #1 overall pick.  Of course, I'm not sold on Mario Williams either.  Vince Young anybody? Although I think Schaub will turn into a solid starter... but still.

Strange football season
With the exception of New England, and maybe Indy, who's playing as predicted?

miami maybe?
I figured they wouldn't be any good, but I guess it's a bit of a surprise that they're pretty god-awful...Rams have surprised me, but they've certainly had injury issues.

Huge fire?
Reality intrusion: Where I live up in the back of Pacifica, near county park land, the air is full of smoke. I can't see a fire, but there may be something up in the hills. We're far enough away to be safe, but I wonder what the hell is going on.

If anyone hears anything, let me know.

They've really kept the private matter under wraps. Normally, somebody would have leaked something. Considering there was a priest with him when he spoke with Nolan, I'd guess it's a death in the family.

Some good news
From Instant 49ers:

Something interesting happened about two hours before kickoff. Out on the sun-splashed field emerged a familiar figure, who threw several passes in the 6- to 8-yard range to rookie safety Dashon Goldson. Yep, Alex Smith, a week after sustaining a separated right shoulder is beginning to throw again.

Matt Maiocco's commentary on the first half
This is really the worst display of offensive football I've seen. Is that hyperbole? I don't think so. The 49ers have one first down. They are being outgained 198-38. The 49ers have ZERO passing yards because of the two sacks. Dilfer is 2 of 6 for 8 yards. Gore has 37 yards on nine carries. They need to keep feeding him the ball. That is the only chance they have to win this game.

First post - what the hell?
Hi all.  I'm a niner fan moved to MD a few years ago and still am a big fan.  Finally getting to watch a game on TV for the second time this year...  I can't help but think of one question watching this offense (as in rude)...  Does the team have any receivers besides Frank?  Run, Frank, Run Frank, Pass Frank...  what are the other receivers doing?  I saw a couple of times where there were a couple of pretty good offensive play calls, and I counted 5 seconds that Dilfer had to throw... went nowhere... sack...  I mean come on seriously, are there no short passing routes anymore, there's not safety valve?  WTF is going on with this offense?  40 yards of offense?  Seriously?

The defense and special teams, though, really kick some butt... maybe the Defense should play offense I think they'd get more yards.

It's also the only way
to avoid throwing to somebody not named Frank. And the team won't lower themselves to that level. Not if they can help it.

SO what?
Like calling plays to "avoid interceptions" (unsuccessfully, I might add) is doing any good.  I would much rather us take some shots downfield then run it twice up the gut then throw it in the flat for a 2 yard gain and punt.  What the hell are we waiting for?  What do we have to lose?

No speed
Having Battle and Jackson as starters and Gilmore as the third receiver we have extremely slooooow receivers.

And other teams' linemen get in fast because our offensive line has turned to crap. And Dilfer's arm is gone.

What's the difference really?
I mean... weren't all of these guys on offense last year?  So suddenly they all play ineptly and the coaches want to blame the offensive line?  There is more than once that the line really held, of course we've got the Statue of Liberty sitting in the pocket so that doesn't help, but from where I sit, and seeing only a 2nd game on TV from here, the play calling sucks, and I have a real strong suspicion that the offensive woes are due to coaching not players.  You call 2-3 runs up the middle in a row  against the Ravens and gain nothing (no surprise there) and you're pretty much labeled a retard in my book.  Hostler needs to go up to the booth so he can see the defensive alignments better, he's obviously not aware that there are literally 6-7 people AT the line of scrimmage, doesn't looking like they're blizting on the inside, and this is a 3-4 defense!

Oh wait, one completed short pass... Jackson is in the game, someone took his donuts away and told him to get in.

What a shame man.  I am embarrassed...

Oh look another Gore run... surprise... up the middle... weird...

I don't know that...
play calling is conservative as much as plain stupid and poorly thought out, and the game plan just utterly lacking in anything more than basic training camp plays... did anyone actually add plays to that playbook?  Where is Lelie, where are the other receivers we picked up?  Don't give me this there isn't time to throw the ball, there was plenty of time, and when there isn't, you use play action, and short passes... someone go look at some Walsh tapes for crying out loud and you'll learn how to loosen up defenses slowly to get the run going.  pffff...  lame.
