Five Questions with Cat Scratch Reader

I had a chance to sit down with Jaxon over at Cat Scratch Reader and get his thoughts on some of the positives and negatives of a Panthers season that, like the 49ers, began with high hopes, and has gone bad pretty quickly.  Thanks to Jack for taking the time to answer my questions.  I'll be getting him answers later today, which I'll throw up here as well.

NN:The Panthers seemed to be a preseason playoff pick (like my 49ers).  Aside from losing Jake Delhomme, what is the reason for the Panthers struggles this year?

CSR:I think the three primary reasons beyond the poor QB play is (1) no #2 receiving threat, (2) no pass rush and (3) poor special teams play. The Panthers again have the worst special teams in the league and the best I can hope for from week to week is that they don't blow the game (like they have twice this season).

NN: The 49ers offense has been abysmal at times, although they're coming off their best performance of the season.  I would even argue the 49ers offense is worse than the Panthers, Sunday's performance aside.  So, what can 49ers fans expect from the Panthers defense?  Aside from the freak Julius Peppers, who should 49ers fans pay attention to?

CSR: You'll see a lot of zone coverage and the occasional blitz. The Panthers have mainly been relying on their front four to put pressure on the QB. In my opinion the most exciting Panther to watch on defense is rookie MLB Jon Beason. The kid is lightning fast and makes great reads. He won't beat out your rookie MLB Willis for any honors but Panther Nation is very content to let him play the middle for years to come. I don't expect Dan Morgan to be back in Carolina next season. There's no one else other than Peppers I think the 49ers need to worry about.

NN: Jake Delhomme seemed to start the season on a solid note before the injury.  Now the Panthers see themselves deciding between David Carr, Vinny Testaverde and Matt Moore.  What is Delhomme's long term future in Carolina?  Do you see them drafting a QB anytime soon or are they fine for the next few years?

CSR: They had better draft a QB next year AND get another free-agent to back up Jake. David Carr is history IMO and Vinny should retire. There is not a lot of history of QB's coming back from Tommy John surgery so no one is real sure what to expect from Jake. I'd like to think he will be back and in top form but I think that's a risky proposition. Matt Moore is still too much of an unknown to think he'll be ready next year. Hopefully we'll do a better job of evaluating QB talent this off-season.

NN: When is DeAngelo Williams going to pass DeShaun Foster on the depth chart?  Or will this be a timeshare for the foreseeable future?  Foster has never really fulfilled his potential coming out of college and Williams himself was quite the talent coming out of college.

CSR: Prior to this last game I was content letting Foster be the starter. He runs with power, is still fairly quick and makes good cuts. But then he fumbled three times which has always been one of his problems. DeAngelo on the other hand looks great at times and very average others. With the fumbles this just may be the week DeAngelo gets the lion's share of carries. Yet John Fox has been slow to make changes this season so honestly I don't expect any changes. Foster should get 12-18 carries and Williams 4 to 8.

NN: I was a big Dwayne Jarrett fan during his time at USC and would have enjoyed seeing him in red and gold.  Is there any particular reason for his lack of playing time and production?

CSR: At first we were told he was too soft on his blocking. Then it was because he's having a hard time learning the playbook and reacting to on-the-field situational changes. He finally got some playing time the last two weeks but it was obvious to me he still has a ways to go. He's not running his routes correctly and was actually responsible for one of David Carr's picks this past week. He has great hands though and has been playing harder. I still have hope the kid will mature and be the #2 receiver we disparately need.

Jack's Prediction: Panthers 12 - 49ers 10

Thanks again to Jaxon from Cat Scratch Reader.  This could be a real stinker, or a potentially explosive affair.  We'll see how it plays out.

Great interview...
Good questions Fooch.

I agree with you about D. Jarrett.  I thought he would make a good fit in San Fran. Guess we are just stuck with that other DJ.

We are facing a winnable game and it is happening again. Hope is creeping in like an assassin in the night.

Stuck?
Jarret has Mike Williams' bustability completely enveloping him.

I don't think Jarrett would have fit here at all.
He's a big possession receiver with sure hands.  He can't escape from a sleeping turtle if his life depended on it (exaggeration, I know).  The 49ers already have plenty of guys who could play the role that Jarrett would have ultimately filled (i.e. Battle, Lelie).

At least with Jackson, the 49ers can get away from him without any hurt on their future.  The Panthers with Jarret on the other hand?  Not so much.

Jarrett
You guys may be right but it remains to be seen if Jarrett is a bust or not. I am not trying to argue the point too much. I just like the he is a big target, and thought having a big target would help the qbs.  He is bigger than any wr we have now.

I am glad the Niners took Willis and Staley? Hell yea.

Bust!
If he was a first round selection, like many thought he would be, then he'd most definately be considered a bust already.  I mean it's not like he was just haven't trouble unseating Keary Colbert as the #2 WR he was having trouble making the active roster for games.  Not being able to beat out Colbert, Carter and some dude named Ryne Robinson for a roster spot is pretty sad.

You know who this makes happy?
Keyshawn Johnson has to be LOVING the fact that Carolina is in desperate need of a reliable #2 receiver threat.  Talk about vindication after being embarassed on draft day/week.

Also, in terms of evaluating college receivers for the NFL draft, strong route running is highly underrated -- that's why DeSean Jackson (Cal) will be the steal of the draft if he doesn't go top 5.  He's the one receiver I'd be okay with the 49ers trading up to acquire.

DeSean Jackson
From what I've seen of DeSean (admittedly, not a whole lot) and what I've read, there is no way he should even be compared to Jarrett.  Why is that you say?
  • Jarrett not only has had difficulty running routes (which most people thought he should have done well out of college), he has trouble trying to separate.
  • Jackson is a physical freak.  He has all the physical tools (minus his height, and even then it's not like he's THAT short).
Trading up (like that) in this year's draft, in my opinion, is a very bad idea.  The team lacks many more things than a WR, and trading up from the bottom of the first to the middle will take more than just the 1st rounder (bottom) and the 2nd rounder (top of the round) to do.  At least I think it will.

Trading up...
I agree trading up is a bad move, but let's say he falls into the teens, then it might not be a bad idea.  Stranger things have happened at the draft depending on each team's particular needs, not to mention how idiotic NFL scouts are when it comes to college players (I love how Steve Young mocked this a few weeks back after the monday night game -- "he can throw it 70 yards from his knees! Who cares!?"

Jarrett/Jackson Comparison
Maybe I missed something but who was comparing the two?  Anyways, it's not Jackson's height that's going to be a problem it's his size (ie weight) as he's only like 170 lbs.  Basically, DeSean is Ted Ginn Jr. but with much better route running ability.

You know...
Now that I look back at it, I think my comment came out of no where.  I don't remember what I responding to, but apparently it wasn't that comment!

Interestingly Enough
Mr. Matt Miller ranks Ten Ginn Jr. higher than Desean Jackson on basically all accounts including route running.  But from what I've seen from both, which probably isn't extensive enough, I've got it the other way.  But Jackson's lack of route running ability might explain why he seemed to disappear for games at a time.

So
It turns out the prediction games for this week will also be shown on the NFL network, so nobody gets to play.

:)

Sorry Fooch, I was just going to shoot you an e-mail, but then I thought of this joke and couldn't resist.

How long
I wonder how long the NFL is going to run this NFL Network Thursday Night exclusive thing.  As much as I'd like to watch a good game (and tonight's game should be pretty darn good), I don't think I would go out and pay for that one channel.

Does it come with the standard Comcast HD package?

I got it for this game
They have a deal where it's just 3 bucks a month until March.  You get a few other sports channels too, so it's not just NFL Network.

Oh yeah
Once you call and purchase it (that takes about 10 minutes), you get the channel within about 5-10 minutes.  You know, if you change your mind.

Green Bay already got screwed on Dallas' opening possession.  TO with a catch at the sideline, Harris strips the ball before he goes out of bounds.  Harris had control of it, but the refs called TO down because of forward progress, which was B.S. because he never really had control of the ball.

Sports Tier
Out here in San Francisco it's part of a sports tier that is pretty solid if you're a big sports fan.  Like I get NBA TV which is sometimes fun to watch.  Also, a bunch of random FSN networks from around the country.

Re. How long
Not sure how long their going to show games on NFL network. They did some different things trying to be inovative I guess.

I know down in here in Texas you can get NFL network through DirecTV as part of a package for about 60 bucks a month.

Not sure about the Comcast HD package.
