GO NINERS!

EDITOR'S UPDATE 10AM - NO Gore, NO Walt Harris. Let's hope Hicks and Robinson can step up.

Go Niners
maybe a lineup change will be that the defense will play offense and score.

P.S.  F-ing time change.  Set my alarm to get up at 10 AM.  Turns out it's 9.  Boo.

We are not who I thought we were.

There's hope
Atlanta is really a bad, bad team. If we win this we are are 3-5, and after a horrible month and a half have a chance of making noise in the NFC West. If we can't win this one the only noise we'll be making is a death rattle.

Let's see how the D works on this drive.

Tarell Brown
Does this mean we might get to see some Tarell Brown?  That could be interesting if we do.

And the nice 3 and out to start.

Throwing deep to VD down the middle.

That should keep the defense loosened up.

The knock on VD
coming out of college was, despite his enormous talent he does not play smart. Another example.

by Bob In Pacifica on Nov 4, 2007 11:33 AM PST reply actions

Smith
Painfully obvious now that this guy doesn't have what it takes.  He is overthrowing wide open receivers when he has plenty of time.  He NEEDS to make those throws if we are going to win this game, and he simply can't make them.

I'm seeing shades of Joey Harrington in Alex Smith.  At this point he should have shown the ability to turn into a successful starting quarterback.  He hasn't.  He won't.

by Call It The Throw on Nov 4, 2007 11:39 AM PST reply actions

Also...
A very telling drive at the end of the half by the Niners. Nolan was satisfied in settling for the FG from the very beginning.  There was plenty of time to put together a TD drive, and he showed no urgency.

We are constantly playing like a team thats trying to protect the lead. The problem is, we never have the lead.  Again I ask, what in the hell are we waiting for?  We're a 2-5 team on the verge of becoming entirely irrelevant...what the hell do we have to lose by playing aggressive, gutsy, risky football?  Nolan is disappointing.

by Call It The Throw on Nov 4, 2007 11:47 AM PST up reply actions

This game is slightly more entertaining
because of the competition, but if you lose to Atlanta, that seals the deal. The coaching is poor, and they're not getting the players.

Smith either rushes his deep passes, thus missing his receivers, or he holds onto the ball too long on shorter passes, either not giving the receivers a chance for any YAC or setting them up for getting smacked by the defenders.

This is not good.

The running game does not work to the left. How many times have I seen a running back run to the left and the guard and tackle haven't moved anyone an inch? Running wide to the right at least seems to get yardage.

Dilfer runs onto the field and gets nailed for a penalty.

Next year, whoever's coaching the team, it's time to bring in a couple of free agent QBs (maybe someone from the Arena League) and draft someone else. If Hill isn't qualified for the league, get ride of him. Accept Dilfer's retirement.

Is Lelie suited up today? Oh, what does it matter?

Notice how Staley and Smiley (or whoever the guard was on that play) really exploded off the line on Robinson's run and over on the left side the runner doesn't even get to the line of scrimmage. I'd like to blame it on Jennings, but he's not even in Atlanta.

That failed run to the right on third down was due to a missed block in the center of the line. Too many players rushing the backfield on that play.

It would be hard to argue
that the Niners have sunk into the depths of suckitude.

They can still win the game, but I'm getting that suffocating feeling that our offense is not going in the right direction. It's as if on that first drive Nolan saw what worked and told Hostler not to do it anymore.

by Bob In Pacifica on Nov 4, 2007 12:27 PM PST up reply actions

Absolutely.
We seem to satisfied by moral victories at this point.  One good drive and we decide to mail it in.

Against the Saints and the Giants we had TD drives in garbage time, and the team looks all happy with themeselves on the sideline.  We need to stop patting ourselves on the back for playing shitty football.

If the Falcons get a TD here
the eight points will be an insurmountable lead. That would require three field goals.

by Bob In Pacifica on Nov 4, 2007 12:23 PM PST reply actions

The four points might be an insurmountable lead.
That would require two field goals.

Ugh!
Why did they need a timeout before that play? Maybe they were just trying to get the best placement for the field goal.

by Bob In Pacifica on Nov 4, 2007 12:40 PM PST reply actions

The Disease and success
So let's see, when the 49ers force The Disease on other teams they're able to move the ball.  When they try other stuff, not quite so successful.  I don't understand what happened between the first drive and this last drive (even with only a field goal).

Nolan spends time outs like they're going out of style...I bet he thinks he can't use them with under 2 minutes left in each half!

the Falcons will come out of this with a field goal. Niners cannot overcome this.

Smith sucks. The coaches suck. Suck suck suck.

Suck suck suck.

We should get a good pick IN THE SECOND ROUND.
