Round 1 Playoff Prediction Games

EDITOR'S UPDATE 1/4/08 12:51PM - Seems like a good idea to move this back up to the top with the games starting tomorrow.

EDITOR'S NOTE - 5PM - Just wanted to bring this to the front to remind people we've got two postseason prediction contests. One contest is for everybody and the other is for the playoff bracket shown at the end. The bracket winner gets a front page post and the winner of the general contest for everybody gets a front page post. Eventually I might have money to get real prizes...Stay tuned.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Since the Playoff Games don't rely on Fooch picking out the games for us to play with, and since I'm right here already working on all this stuff, I thought I'd go ahead and play king for a day and throw up the upcoming Prediction Games!

Remember we have 2 games going on during the playoffs.

One is an absolute Free For All. Anybody who wants to play can play and everybody starts back at Zero. The slate is wiped clean. The only scoring difference in the playoffs will be that perfect predictions will be worth 5 points, as opposed to the regular season 10.

The other game is our 8 Player Playoff Bracket being played by the top 8 predictors from the regular season. This is a 3 round event, in which the top seeds always face off against the low seeds, and the Championship Matchup runs through the final week of the playoffs and the Super Bowl. There are no outright rewards for perfect predictions, though they do factor heavily into tiebreaks. For those playing, remember that you have the option to e-mail your predictions to Fooch, who can post them separately. This would just be a precaution to keep you from suffering a condition that I call "getting your ass Price Is Right-ed." For an in depth breakdown of rules and scoring, just click on the hyperlink I created on the words "rules and scoring."

If you're playing in both games, you only have to make one set of predictions that will get played in both. In fact, for my scorekeeping sanity, I insist that you only make one set of predictions.

With that out of the way, the first round games are as follows:

Washington @ Seattle - SAT 4:30PM EST

Jacksonville @ Pittsburgh - SAT 8:00PM EST

Tennessee @ San Diego - SUN 4:30PM EST

New York @ Tampa Bay - SUN 8:00PM EST

Enjoy.

Lastly, our 8 player Bracket breaks down like this (I decided it's simpler AND cleaner not to bother with a graphic):

(8) cheno  @  (1) sfgfan
(7) Sprint Right Option  @  (2) rimrock101
(6) HowTheyScored  @  (3) Jayp849
(5) marcello  @  (4) wjackalope

EDITOR'S NOTE: 4:00PM - I just came up with a simple bracket through Excel and then using the basic Windows Paint function to turn it into a JPG file. If anyone can come up with something better, feel free to and let me know. Otherwise, here you go.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Crap
This means you're rooting against me, right?  Hopefully the negative karma will propel me to victory.

If I were to win, my front page post would mostly be about video games (with a blatant attempt at an Alex Smith tie-in).  Anyone supporting me now?  No?

None taken
Now I can play up the underdog/lack of respect angle just like the professional teams.

Happy to oblige
If you're looking for a quote to post in the locker room, here it is:

"marcello will never get it done" -- SRO

There, now when you win, you can say, "They said we couldn't get it done", and be telling the truth. As for my game, I'm going the Broadway Joe route:

"We'll win. I guarantee it." -- SRO

"You gotta bring ass, to get ass." --EDDIE DeBARTOLO JR.

Hey Jayp849
I got my preds into Fooch today with my tiebreak prediction for total yards in the WAS/SEA game. To tell the truth, you were one of a couple people I didn't want to bracketed against in round 1 because you've been so damn consistent and I was hoping to at least make it to round 2.

I took a few chances this week, and I hope they pay off. I just can't be sure with the competitive balance of the playoffs, though. One thing that really surprised me was how few good teams most of these WC teams actually beat in the regular season. WAS/SEA both got in by beating a lot of bad teams. JAX/PIT both won a lot of games against bad teams, too, though both faced stiffer competition than the NFC seeds. You can throw TEN/SD in that mix as well. And to some extent, TB had a pretty weak schedule.

It should be a fun week, Jayp849! I'm excited to see how I do against one of the top seeds. Just don't forget to get your preds in!

I saw on ESPN
Chris Berman giving his first round predictions. Thinking quickly I opened up my notebook and took them down, so for funsies this week we'll also go against Berman! Of course, none of his points will count, but I thought it would be pretty cool to do for funsies.

So here they are: CHRIS BERMAN'S PREDICTIONS

24 - 19 Jags

16 - 29 Chargers

16 - 23 Hawks

19 - 23 Bucs

Interesting. He's got a lot of 16s and 19s in there.

I like Chris Berman
Who cares if he never played football in his life? Keyshawn Johnson played plenty of football and he's none of the worst broadcasting personalities in the world.

Berman's basically paid to be a personality. He's entertaining AND professional, which is more than I can say for most of the other guys. Also, he's a Niners fan. And I love him for that.

When the Niners beat the Cardinals to win their 3rd game this year he actually took ten full minutes out of NFL Tonight to cover the results of the game. For that I will always love him.

And his broadcasting of the HR Derby was fun. Back back back back back back back back back back... and it drops at the wall.

Well...
That Seattle score sure is funny.

But we have plenty of differences in two of the other three games, so I think we're good to go! Good luck.

Format
My apologies for the format.  Some of the scores are listed backwards based on where the teams are listed above.  The team name listed is correct so just take the score accordingly (thus indeed they both picked Seattle to win 21-17).

by cheno on Jan 5, 2008 9:41 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Nah
Not acccrding to the rules and scoring we didn't get any complaints about. Basically you get 1 point for every game you win, and then the first tiebreak is the person who predicted more winners correctly (because, say, one person can predict 4 winners while the other predicts only 3, or 2, and they can still end up tied in points because of closeness), then the second tiebreak is overall closeness (where obviously perfects would be extremely beneficial. This is the second tiebreak because if say, there was a tie between a 4 winner predictor and a 2 winner predictor, the 4 winner would have a higher overally closeness score just from having more games that are scorable). And then the last tiebreak would be the yards prediction.

So cheno's right. Neither one gets a point for the SEA tie, and cheno wins a point for the Pitt game. sfgfan either sweeps tomorrow, or hopes to win the TB/NY game and score a tie in SD and go to tiebreaks.

by cheno on Jan 6, 2008 1:52 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

By my calculations
If Tennesse wins, then sfgfan takes the secondary tiebreak (as you tie the primary tiebreak), by having a better overall closeness of 12 to 40 (his score of 12 in the NY game beats your score of 40 in the Jacksonville game).

Your hope rests with SD winning, and your prediction being closer - thus breaking the tie in your favor!
