Mock Draft Open Thread

So in my travels around SB Nation I've noticed some mock drafts being posted.  Additionally, I learned that if we put a mock draft together we can get our picks posted over at the largest mock draft database on the web.

So rather than just throw something together on my own, I thought I'd throw this open to you the readers and see what people think.  If you have an idea about one player or want to post an entire first round draft throw it out there.  Some reasoning is welcome but if you just want to put together a list that's fine.  I'm going to put together my own thoughts and add it in today or tomorrow, but let's here what everyone else has to say.

[EDITOR'S UPDATE 9:40PM] - Here's what I've come up with myself (certainly harder than one would think). I want to submit something to the mock draft database by the end of the day on Tuesday so feel free to comment and let me know what you think is crazy and/or just plain stupid. I want this to be somewhat of a consensus on a Niners Nation mock draft. However, it's one mock out of a million, thus the reason I'm throwing this out there for only a day. My big question: Thoughts on if Griffin is to far down? I kept wanting to plug him in but thought of better options at various positions. Let me know your thoughts.

  1. Oakland - QB JaMarcus Russell - Could change to Calvin Johnson/Joe Thomas with Moss trade
  2. Detroit - QB Brady Quinn - Filled RB/O-Line needs - need someone to succeed Kitna
  3. Cleveland - RB Adrian Peterson - Will take some of Lewis's carries and take over in year 2
  4. Tampa Bay - WR Calvin Johnson - Plenty of needs, but CJ could give them an awesome weapon opposite Galloway
  5. Arizona - OL Joe Thomas - Would have to be happy to see him there
  6. Washington - DE Gaines Adams - Could use a pass rusher opposite Andre Carter and Adams seems to be the best of the bunch
  7. Minnesota - DE Jamaal Anderson - Could use a receiver but this is too high for any of the remaining receivers
  8. Atlanta - DT Alan Branch - They could really improve their pass rush here
  9. Miami - S LaRon Landry - The best talent on defense, an area they need to improve
  10. Houston - OT Levi Brown, PSU (If they keep David Carr, they definitely need someone to keep him off his ass - a candidate to trade down
  11. San Francisco 49ers - DT Amobi Okoye - His experience at such a young age makes him too tempting to pass over
  12. Buffalo - RB Marshawn Lynch - Need to replace McGahee…candidate to trade down if they think they can get Lynch later
  13. St. Louis - DE Adam Carriker - Had considered Willis, but they could use a hybrid over an inside linebacker
  14. Carolina - S Reggie Nelson - They could use some help across from Mike Minter
  15. Pittsburgh - DE/OLB Jarvis Moss - They need a replacement for Joey Porter
  16. Green Bay - CB Leon Hall - Both Arlen Harris and Charles Woodson are getting up there in age
  17. Jacksonville - WR Ted Ginn, Jr - They need someone to stretch the field and compliment Wilford and Matt Jones
  18. Cincinnati - LB Patrick Willis - They'd be happy to see Willis drop here and they could use linebacker help
  19. Tennessee - WR Dwayne Jarrett, USC - Fitting irony for Young to be throwing to Jarrett next year
  20. N.Y. Giants - LB Paul Posluszny - Someone needs to fill their void at linebacker and Posluszny just sounds like a football player
  21. Denver - DE Anthony Spencer - Their line is filled with former potential guys - time to get a youngster to push the veterans
  22. Dallas - CB Chris Houston - After loading up on offense, the time has come to improve the secondary
  23. Kansas City - WR Dwayne Bowe, LSU - After Bowe's Pro Day, the Chiefs hope he can be the future at WR for them
  24. New England - CB, Darrelle Revis - A couple months ago he was projected as a 49er…my how things change
  25. N.Y. Jets - WR Robert Meachem - They need someone to compliment Coles and Meachem could provide that
  26. Philadelphia - DB, Aaron Ross - Sheldon Brown is NOT the answer across from Lito Sheppard.
  27. New Orleans - DB Marcus McCauley - Secondary's been a problem - unless one of the bigger names falls to them McCauley is the choice
  28. New England - LB Jon Beason - He can develop to replace Vrabel or Bruschi
  29. Baltimore - G Ben Grubbs - The Ravens need tackle help, but Grubbs could potentially be converted
  30. San Diego - S Michael Griffin - I'm just thinking he'd be too much of a steal here for the Chargers
  31. Chicago - TE Greg Olsen - I like the idea of this a a value pick to eventually replace Desmond Clark
  32. Indianapolis - DT Justin Harrell - I'd thought safety, but good call on DT making more sense
Thoughts?

Trade possibilities
I think Quinn goes #2, but not necessarily to the Lions.  I think Minnesota, Miami, and possibly Cleveland could trade up to the number 2 spot for Quinn.  I also think it's very likely the Skins trade out of the 6th spot to add picks.  Someone will want Adams or Branch and look to move into the 6th spot.

Minnesota
If Minnesota trades up they're taking Johnson over Quinn.  They need a reciever badly and I think they want to see what Jackson can do at QB.

by methodrampage on Mar 18, 2007 9:26 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Probably right
You're probably right, but I think is already better prepared to start in the NFL than Jackson is.  There will be a few decent WR's at the top of the second round Minnesota could grab, or even stay put and take Ginn or Jarrett at 7.

That should have read Quinn is already better prepared than Jackson.

Quinn
I'm just not sold on Quinn.  One plus he has going for him is that Charlie Weiss was able to mold him...but I just can't help but think of Rick Mirer.  We'll see I guess.

Quinn
He appeared to be a very accurate passer, a necessity in the West Coast offense run by Brad Childress.  Having played in a pro style offense for the last two years, and playing for a former NFL offensive coordinator, I think Quinn is probably ready for the pros.  I'm not sure what Seattle was thinking with Mirer, the guy had a 54% completion percentage in college.  I don't see any similarities between the two outside of playing at Notre Dame.

by gatling on Mar 18, 2007 10:29 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well
I'm probably as big of a Quinn critic as there is, and it's not because of his accuracy, his arm strength, or the system he played in.

Quinn is definitely the most NFL ready of any QB in the draft, but there are a few things that give me pause. He did not show marked improvement in his second year in Weiss's system (and I've heard very good arguments regarding the rest of the team about why that might be, but I just don't buy them), so I kind of feel that he isn't all that far from his ceiling already. I'm not sold on his work ethic. He's prone to getting comfortable. It seemed to me he came in with a fat ego and no ethic this last year and really took a few embarrassing early games to get going. For the same reason, I think he's a guy who needs a heavy amount of coaching, which even at the NFL is hardly a guarantee. Lucky he had Weiss at ND to begin with. And lastly, and it's tough to use this argument because people will point to games like the 31-34 loss to USC two years ago, but he had bad days in most of the big games during the course of his college career.

I'm trying to look at things that are harder to measure, of course, and I'm open to deserved criticism for doing so with some of the things I've chosen too look at. But there are always guys with size, strength, ability, and experience who just capsize in the NFL, and these are some of the things that I think about when I think about why. I don't think that failure is entirely the case with Quinn, but I do believe that he will struggle to ever put up consistent success as an NFL starter. I think he's destined to journeyman status, with a heaping helping of glorified backup.

Would I put a first round pick on that kind of gamble? This year, when the third rated QB is Tren Edwards by some standards, yeah I would. Most other years when there's just a little more overall polish from top to bottom, probably not.

I keep reliving the moment when Steve Young almost fell down... over and over...

I like this
#11 is a good spot for the Redskins and I think we can get some solid value for our #6 pick here, though I'd be interested to see what Niners fans would be willing to give up to move to #6.

Personally, I would take Adam Carriker at DE over Moss. I believe Moss might work out better at 3-4, though that is entirely uncreative copy-cat speculation.

by Skin Patrol on Mar 18, 2007 8:36 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Moss vs. Carriker
One thing to keep in mind is that Moss is more than likely going end up as an OLB while Carriker will stay on the line.  Does that affect your thoughts on who to take if you were to trade down to 11?
Niners Nation - The premier 49ers blog on the Internet!

by Fooch on Mar 18, 2007 8:53 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely.
The Redskins do not run a 3-4 nor do they need an OLB -- they draft McIntosh last year and Lemar Marshall was just supplanted at ILB despite starting his Redskins career at OLB. We're good at that position.

We need an pure DE badly; I'd say Carriker over Moss.

Trade
I suggested this last week, with the Niners giving up picks #11, #76, and #106.  That gets us close on the draft value chart, and adds a 3rd and 4th round pick for the Skins.  I could also see a possible 2008 pick being included.

by gatling on Mar 18, 2007 9:11 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not a bad deal
#76 is worth 210, #106 is worth 82 = 302. 48 draft points left -- we'd take the 5th rounder as well. #139 is worth 36.5; keep the change.

by Skin Patrol on Mar 18, 2007 10:08 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I picked Moss
for the Skins because I figured he would be a better pass rusher off the edge in Gibbs' one gap scheme. Granted, it didn't really work with Andre Carter, but the Redskins need a pass rush even more desperately than we do. I could see Moss staying at end in that system. However if Washington's scouts think otherwise, I agree that I would choose Carriker.

Redskins/Adams
If Gaines Adams is there after Arizona picks, I highly doubt the Skins trade down considering Adams is considered the best defensive end in the draft.  If the Cardinals took Adams then maybe they consider dealing down.

I think even
if Adams or Anderson is available, there is a good chance the Redskins trade down.

trades
I think both of those trades are perfectly reasonable...Although for the Lions/Bucs, is your reasoning because if the deal doesn't happen, are the Bucs worried CJ and Thomas will be gone at that point?  Maybe then the Bucs trade down to let someone get Quinn or maybe Adrian Peterson at the 4?
Niners Nation - The premier 49ers blog on the Internet!

by Fooch on Mar 18, 2007 8:55 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

My thoughts on the Lions/Bucs trade
is based on what I would do if I were that franchise. Detroit is a lot more than one player away from contending. They are also sitting on a gold mine in that there are several teams chomping at the bit to trade up to draft Johnson. If I'm Millen, I move down a few spots and still land a top 10 pick along with possibly another 1st rounder in '08. I don't see any reasonable scenario where the Lions keep this pick.

Tampa Bay
Has very little to gain from making this move, unless they're trying to block someone else from moving up into that #2 slots and if so let the bidding begin.

Tampa has a pretty solid chance at landing Johnson at #4 and really don't see them trying to trade up 2 spots when they more than likely wouldn't have to.

by methodrampage on Mar 19, 2007 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

My guess is
they will have to. How often does the consensus best player in the draft fall to no. 4, regardless of team needs? I don't think detroit will take him because of the pr risks of taking yet another 1st rnd receiver and they have too many needs to put all of their eggs into a Brady Quinn or Joe Thomas. Johnson is a once in a decade talent and there will be plenty of teams looking to trade up to two or three in order to nab him. If I were Tampa, I wouldn't be comfortable waiting for him to come to me at 4.

Detroit and Cleveland
You said Detroit won't take him.  Why would Cleveland, they have Braylan Edwards who looks like he can become a legit #1.  I think they have other pressing needs and WR isn't exactly at the top of the list.  I'd be interested in hearing why you think Cleveland would take Johnson over Peterson, Thomas, or Quinn.

by methodrampage on Mar 20, 2007 7:22 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dont
What I'm saying is that in both cases, (especially detroit) those teams have a huge sell high advantage to move down in the draft. Joe Thomas doesn't make Detroit or Cleveland a contender next year. Neither does Quinn or Peterson. Both teams are in the same position we were a few years ago. The difference is that no one wanted the 1st overall pick when we had it. There was no clear cut, can't miss player. This year there is. Both teams have a ton of holes to fill and have a spot in the draft that people covet as a means to draft Calvin Johnson. I'm not saying I think Detroit or Cleveland will take Johnson (although they could, New Orleans already had Deuce and still took Reggie Bush), I'm saying that at least one of them is likely to sell him to the highest bidder before Tampa has a chance at him at number 4. I could be dead wrong, but I think that makes the most sense for both teams.

A couple of thoughts...
From everything I've read, if Quinn is there Cleveland will jump on him.  Also, the Colts will likely look at DT or LB over CB, we have 3 players ready to fight it out for Nick Harper's starting spot.

I love the Niners moving up to #6, this is exactly something I can see happening, and suggested last week.  Branch is a guy I'm starting think would be the best pick for us, although if we don't move I'd love to see Okoye.  The kid is very bright and only 19.  I think Nolan could mold him into a monster.

by gatling on Mar 18, 2007 9:09 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Okoye
I agree on Okoye.  I've read people don't think he'd be a good fit as a 3-4 nose tackle.  However, when you're only 19 I think you can be molded from 4-3 tackle to 3-4 nose tackle.  Maybe someone with more football experience could fill us in, but it seems that his youth is such a big plus for attempting this kind of conversion.
Niners Nation - The premier 49ers blog on the Internet!

by Fooch on Mar 18, 2007 10:02 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Okoye
I'm actually thinking of him as a DE.  He wouldn't have to be a starter this year, not a lot of pressure on the kid.  He could rotate with Young and Douglas, learning from the vets and preparing for a starting role in 2008.  Being only 19, he could play for 15 years and take the torch from BY and be the face/leader of the defense.

by gatling on Mar 18, 2007 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Okoye at DE
I think Okoye is athletic enough to play DE, it might take him a little while to learn the position but he's extremely young and I can't imagine how beneficial it would be to learn from BY.  Okoye would be a project but probably has more upside than any DL left on the board when we pick.  If he's there he's probably our pick.

by methodrampage on Mar 18, 2007 11:44 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hope so
He's 2-3 years younger than the average player coming out, but he's very intelligent.  I think he's  possibly the best long term choice.  If we're going for instant gratification, it's probably Carriker.  I think that will determine who we take, are we willing to wait on a guy or not?

by gatling on Mar 18, 2007 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Besides intelligence
He has experience. This guy started college at 15, began playing college football when he was 16 and he will be a college graduate when drafted. Being 19 is an advantage not a detractor in this situation. We have seen what super intelligence gets us; Kwame Harris, but I've heard interviews with Okoye and he seems like he's ready.

There are a couple of things I'd change from your mock.  Unless something has changed since the combine, Chris Houston will be the second corner off the board, not Revis.  The other thing is, the Colts won't draft a safety, they'll be going for LB or DT.  Last year's 6th round pick Antoine Bethea won a starting job to start last year and will be teaming with Bob Sanders.  Marlin Jackson sits behind them, and is a more than capable backup.  Some might think with Nick Harper leaving for Tennessee that corner would be a need, but Kelvin Hayden(INT returned for TD in the Super Bowl) is likely to start opposite Jason David, with 2005 2nd rounder Tim Jennings and Jackson both seeing time there as well.

With Cato June signing with Tampa and the other starting outside linebacker Rob Morris a free agent also, that is likely the top target in the draft.  Defensive tackle could be the pick here also, Corey Simon is likely to be released and Monte Reagor has already been released.  That's the two starting tackles from 2005.  Booger McFarland is set at one tackle spot, and Raheem Brock rotates from tackle to end, but the Colts rotate 6-8 lineman in and out, so another tackle like Tennessee's Justin Harrell wouldn't surprise me.

The only way I could see the Colts taking Griffin here is if they feel they can turn him into an OLB, like they did with Cato June who played safety at Michigan.  I'm not sure if they'd try that in the first round or not.

Good points
Good point about Revis and Houston.  I think some of my info was a little dated...I'll flip flop those 2 picks.  What are your thoughts in comparing Justin Harrell (DT - Texas) vs. DeMarcus Tyler (DT - NC State)?
Niners Nation - The premier 49ers blog on the Internet!

by Fooch on Mar 20, 2007 8:46 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Harrell vs. Tyler
Tyler strikes me more as a NT in a 3-4 truly than a 4-3 tackle.  I think he'd be a solid pickup for the Niners in round 2 honestly, especially if we go for a DE like Okoye or Carriker.  He's a big guy(6'2" 323 or so) and isn't real quick I don't think.

Harrell is the name I'm seeing associated with the Colts the most, although if Jon Beason of Miami is there, they might look at him for an OLB spot.  Harrell is the guy I see the Colts taking, as he's lighter, quicker tackle and would fit in the Colts scheme better.  Quinn Pitcock is another guy I think the Colts might look at for DT help.  From what I've read, if Harrell had been healthy he'd have been a top 15 pick potentially.  I'd say he's probably the favorite there, but if he's gone Pitcock is a good second choice.

No way Olsen is around when the Bears pick
he combined his way up to the low 20s at worst.  I fully expect the Bears to be looking to move one way or another, it might very well be up to take a shot at Olsen, but I don't think that will happen.  If they wanted a TE, they could have had Pope three times last year and didn't go after him, why this year since Clark had a great one?

I am thinking the most likely positions in order are OL,S,DL.

I like the look of it
The only thing I disagree with is the Packers passing on Marshawn Lynch.  I think they have a bigger need at RB than WR, although both are needs.

My Mock (hopefully void of errors)
1.  Oakland Raiders       Jamarcus Russel, QB, LSU

Barring any trades that bring them a QB, I can't see them taking anyone else here.
2.  Detroit Lions         Brady Quinn, QB, ND

After the Harrington debacle and the countless top-pick WRs over the years, it's finally time they start with a new "face of the franchise".
3.  Cleveland Browns      Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin

He could be the final piece of their project to solidify an offensive line.
4.  Tampa Bay Buccaneers  Calvin Johnson, WR, GA Tech

They could actually use more help on the defensive side of the ball, but you can't pass up on CJ with this pick.
5.  Arizona Cardinals     Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson

What they really need is a stud OL, but they also need plain ol' talent.  Adams is probably the highest ranking player left on their board at this point.
6.  Washington Redskins   Jamaal Anderson, DE, Arkansas

They really need help in at least two of the four defensive line spots, and Anderson will be one step toward that.  Could also look at Branch or Carriker.
7.  Minnesota Vikings     Levi Brown, OT, Penn St

They really need a RT, but Brown may be a reach.  Like Washington, they could be looking at Carriker and Branch as well.
8.  Houston Texans        Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma

They'll be ecstatic that Peterson is still there at #9.  After passing on Bush last season, you can't believe they'll do it again with Peterson.
9.  Miami Dolphins        LaRon Landry, S, LSU

They just need talent all over the field.  Their secondary, while solid, is full of would-be backups on better teams.  Landry offers a playmaker to the defensive backfield.
10. Atlanta Falcons       Alan Branch, DT, Michigan

Devastated that Landry is gone at this point and taking any other DB at this point would be a stretch, they'll go with the "total package" in Branch.  Okoye may also be an option.
11. San Francisco 49ers   Patrick Willis, LB, Ole Miss

This move will signal the beginning of the end for Derek Smith at ILB.  Carriker may also be an option here.
12. Buffalo Bills         Leon Hall, CB, Michigan

With Willis gone now, they'll look to shore up their secondary and replace Clements.  Lynch (RB, Cal) is also an option.
13. St. Louis Rams        Adam Carriker, DE, Nebraska

Their defensive line is old on one side, and lacking talent on the other.  Okoye should be able to step in and start alongside Glover.
14. Carolina Panthers     Greg Olsen, TE, Miami

Olsen's stock has really skyrocketed in recent weeks, and Delhomme really needs a second option underneath.  WR or LB may be an option here as well.
15. Pittsburgh Steelers   Jon Beason, OLB, Miami

To fill Porter's Vacancy, the Steelers will most likely take an OLB with this pick.  DE/OLB Jarvis Moss is also a possibility, with a CB like Chris Houston a dark horse pick.
16. Green Bay Packers     Ted Ginn, WR, Ohio St

They could use a second wideout, as many believe their WRs over-achieved last season.  Bowe and Meachem may also be possibilities here.
17. Jacksonville Jaguars  Paul Posluszny, OLB, Penn St

They'll probably be torn between Posluszny at LB or Reggie Nelson at S, as both are "need" positions for them.  Depth at CB may also be a possibility.
18. Cincinnati Bengals    Amobi Okoye, DT, Louisville

The Bengals are one of the rare teams that have no dire need at any position.  With Sam Adams getting up there in age but still effective, Okoye may have one season to adjust to the NFL.
19. Tennessee Titans      Dwayne Bowe, WR, LSU

The need for a WR is great for this team, who may end up coming away with at least two in the draft.  Meachem and Jarrett are also possibilities here.
20. New York Giants       Marshawn Lynch, RB, CAl

Should be able to sufficiently replace Tiki Barber.  He may not be as good all-around as Barber, but he's definately got a lot to offer.
21. Denver Broncos        Chris Houston, CB, Arkansas

The Broncos unexpectingly now have a serious need at CB.  Luckily for them, Houston may end up being the best corner of this draft.
22. Dallas Cowboys        Darrelle Revis, CB, Pittsburgh

They really would like to take a CB here and may be lucky enough to end up with Houston or Revis.  They may also settle for someone to play alongside Roy Williams (Reggie Nelson).
23. Kansas City Chiefs    Robert Meachem, WR, Tenn

They really need offensive line help, but would be a stretch to take any of the remaining ones here.  Meachem should bolster and already solid WR group.
24. New England Patriots  Reggie Nelson, S, Florida

Rodney Harrison isn't getting any younger, so the Patriots may be looking ahead with this pick.  Nelson is solid and should benefit from playing a reserve role for a year.
25. New York Jets         Dwayne Jarrett, WR, USC

They need a wideout that can complement Coles.  The bigger and well-developed Jarrett should do just that.
26. Philadelphia Eagles   Marcus McCauley, CB, Fresno St

Their CB group is very thin, and even if (big if) he can't start in the first season, he should offer solid depth there.
27. New Orleans Saints    Aaron Ross, CB, Texas

He may not start the season off with a starting orle, but by season's end, he'll be forcing his way into it.
28. New England Patriots  Brian Leonard, FB, Rutgers

A very versatile back that fits into the Belichick mold of a "football player" as he can play HB or FB.
29. Baltimore Ravens      Joe Staley, OT, Cent. Mich.

A converted tight end, he is amazingly quick for weighing in over 300 pounds.  The Ravens have plenty of time to mold him into a stud tackle.
30. San Diego Chargers    Sidney Rice, WR, S. Carolina

They could use a wide reciever to help stretch the field.  Rice isn't necessarily a burner, but he's fast enough to get the job done.
31. Chicago Bears         Lawrence Timmons, OLB, Fl. St.

With the Briggs "issues" at hand and his likely departure after next season, Timmons is a solid choice to potentially make Briggs tradeable/expendable.
32. Indianapolis Colts    Quinn Pitcock, DT, Ohio St.

A solid (at the very least) option for DT.  Their run defense is bad and would like to add a LB or CB, but DT is also a pressing need.

Okoye
You really see Okoye dropping down to 18?  It just seems that a talent like that, at the age he's at, won't fall that far.  Just my own opinion though.

Yeah
I completely understand where you (and probably a lot of others) are coming from.  He is an interesting prospect that has a ton of physical ability and a lot of potential to grow in any direction.

While I have him tabbed at 18, its completely likely that he could go anywhere after 13.  I really believe that he'll get past the 49ers, and that Nolan and McCloughan will take Willis.  I also believe that the Bills, even with Okoye there, have Hall rated higher on their board.

It'll all really depend on where Branch goes.  If he goes early (like #6 to the Redskins), then Okoye will go earlier.  I just don't know where Branch will go for sure.  I've read so many contradictory opinions on him and teams needs and desires for a DT early in the draft.

Branch
Todd McShay of Scouts Inc. just said on Sportscenter that Branch's stock is falling due to questions about his "motor" and poor interviews.  He also said it's very possible that Okoye creeps into the top 10.  Interesting things here.

Draft
The more I look here and at my own mock, a couple of things jump out at me.  One, Pittsburgh could be key here.  If they're switching to a 4-3 front, you'll see a guy like Okoye(if he's there) as a more likely pick, but if they stay in the 3-4 you'll see a guy like Jarvis Moss as their pick.

Second, there are so many ways teams could go, it's almost impossible to predict what will happen.  My mock is much different than yours, but I can see almost every pick you have as a likely outcome also.(outside of the Pack passing on Lynch)  The top few picks are fairly certain, but this draft seems so deep and teams seem to have so many needs I can see many ways for everyone to go without having to reach for a guy.

by gatling on Mar 20, 2007 3:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree...
This draft is really deep at most positions.  Another interesting thing I've noticed is that there aren't many teams that have just one or two needs.  They either have many serious needs or none really at all.  That allows teams to really be flexible and just take what talent they like out of what is available.

I also agree that Pittsburgh is a vital cog in the upcoming draft.  A lot really depends on what they decide to do with their front seven.  Even though I tabbed Beason there, he may be a stretch (read may=probably is).  Jarvis Moss could be a viable pick instead.  It all depends on how they compare Moss and Beason (or Posluszny even).  As you said, Okoye is definately a possibility if the line stretches to four for them.

Peterson
I think if Peterson is available at 6 Washington does its best to move out of that slot.  I'm sure Green Bay or Buffalo would like to try and move up to grab him.  I really don't see him falling to Houston though.  But it's hard to do a mock draft and consider trades.  But I don't see Willis being our pick, I've seen him going from 11 to the mid 20s, if Okoye or Carriker are still there.

RB
Buffalo has got to be looking at either Peterson or Lynch in the first round...Unless they wanna go for Bush in the 2nd.....

But Fooch . . . . .
who picks in fron of Buffalo in the 2nd?  Need I say more?

by methodrampage on Mar 20, 2007 4:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Buffalo
One scenario to consider, that just came to me and I think makes lots of sense.  With Buffalo adding Baltimore's third round pick, number 92, coupling it with their second round pick(#43) the value would equal 602.  The Colts under Bill Polian, who only have 5 picks that I count, are somewhat known to deal.  I could easily see Polian moving the Colts first round pick, #32 with a value of 590, for #43 and #92 to add some depth to their draft.  This would allow Buffalo the ability to draft a corner early and pick up Michael Bush at the end of the first round.  It could go the other way, Lynch first and a CB later.  I think this is a very plausible situation.

Gatling makes a good point
I definitely could see the Bills trying to trade up if they didn't take a running back in the first round....And yes it was set up perfectly again for us to take Bush :)

Harrell vs Pitcock
I noticed that gatling and Fooch's mocks have Indy going with DT Justin Harrell out of Tennessee.  Is he clearly rated higher than Quinn Pitcock (DT) out of OSU?

by sfgfan on Mar 21, 2007 9:13 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Harrell vs. Pitcock
Harrell is the player I've seen associated most often with Indy, and he seems to be a good fit for their system.  According to Mel Kiper Jr., had Harrell not gotten hurt in the second game of the year, he could have been a potential top 15 pick.  I haven't seen Pitcock around the first round much, so I'm guessing he's a bit behind Harrell.

If the Colts trade down into the second round to add an extra pick later, I wouldn't be surprised to see them grab Pitcock if Harrell is off the board.

by gatling on Mar 21, 2007 9:39 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see..
After poking around more, I see that Harrell is percieved to be more polished.  It also sounds like Pitcock has hit his physical "peak" per se, where he doesn't have much more room to build up his body, while Harrell has a ton of potential for growth (in that sense).  I guess it makes sense, now.

I think before the combine and such, Pitcock was heralded as a guaranteed first rounder.  I wonder if it was something he did that dropped him, or if it was just Harrell showing a lot more potential in his workouts over the past month or two.

Blalock vs Grubbs
Yet another comparison.  I've read up on these two guys, and both are potential first round picks.  I noticed that Fooch and gatling both have Grubbs going in the first round instead of Blalock.  Is there a significant difference between them, or is it pretty much just a toss-up?

From what I understand, both are weaker against the pass than the run.  Both have problems with defensive players knocking them down.  Blalock appears to be more of a physical specimen, but is raw at OG because he played mostly at OT in college.  Grubbs is a converted DL-to-TE-to-OL, so he is really raw as well.

by sfgfan on Mar 21, 2007 3:48 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Grubbs vs. Blaylock
Grubbs seems to be the concensus top rated guard, according to Kiper and Scouts Inc., so that was a big part of it for me.  Kiper has Baltimore going with OT Joe Staley from Central Michigan, because he can play LT, which could be important if Ogden decides to hang it up.  I don't Ogden playing many more years, but I don't see him hanging it up this year.  With the Ravens having released starting OG Edwin Mulitalo, I felt replacing him might be a more pressing need.  If Ogden does retire, that changes things significantly.

Atlanta moves up to #8 to take....
... Alan Branch?  I like that the Mock Draft is kind of a culmination of all of the ones posted here in the comments.

What's the reason for the change of heart Fooch (Branch vs Landry)?  I really think that if Landry is available at #8, they'll take him.  I tabbed Branch for them because I had Landry gone by the time they picked.

by sfgfan on Mar 22, 2007 9:09 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Branch
Maybe it's just that I'm enamored with Branch.  I think he could really help their pass rush.  I think either guy could realistically be taken there so it's a toss up I guess.
