THAT is how you giveaway...I mean TAKEAWAY a football game! 49ers 20 - Arizona Cardinals 17

Out of frustration I had actually typed the words: "THIS is how you give away a football game."  Thankfully I did not have my own Dewey Defeats Truman moment!  That game went from an ugly and painful 49ers loss to spectacular and thrilling 49ers win in a matter of 3 minutes.  Alex Smith went from goat to hero, Patrick Willis had a nice little coming out party and in the end it was the always unassuming Arnaz Battle who won this game for us.

With all week to analyze this performance, I'm not going to discuss the ineptness of the offense for 57 minutes and just discuss their final 3 minutes.  Considering how poorly he had performed up until the final drive, it was easy to get down on Alex Smith.  And yet, as he did against Seattle and Denver last season, Smith showed the moxie that makes me slightly more confident now that he can guide this team to the Promised Land.  Smith shook off the cobwebs and led the 49ers on a brilliant closing drive thanks in part to a seriously ballsy 25 yard rush on 4th and 1.  The play calling was not pretty at times, but Smith made things happen as he showed confidence in his passes.  The primary difference I noticed was that at the end of the game, Smith was stepping up into the pocket and firing off passes.  The rest of the game he would drop back and then scramble to the left and right and backwards, thus negating his arm strength.

Game Balls
Rather than give a single MVP award out, I figure we'll do like the team does and give out some game balls.

Arizona 4th quarter defense - I'm only half-kidding, but as the Mikes said, the only thing a prevent defense prevents is a win.  I have no problem with a prevent defense when you're up 2 or 3 scores, but NOT when it's a single possession game.

Bryant Young - We'll get to the young linebacker in a second, but every play it seemed like BY was getting pressure on the quarterback or stuffing a run in the backfield.  BY just keeps on ticking and will be a key leader of this defense.  Who will he be providing leadership too?  Oh you know who I'm talking about...

Patrick Willis - The youngster certainly acquitted himself quite well in his regular season debut.  He had 9 total tackles and a forced fumble, but that does not even begin to measure his performance.  Willis was all over the field flashing his world-class speed and making plays, even when he wasn't making the tackle.  The crowd seemed to get quite excited when he popped Leinart after a pass.

Arnaz Battle - I had a piece up about Battle a month or two ago and he has done nothing to diminish my respect for his abilities.  He had 5 receptions for 60 yards which is certainly well and good.  More importantly:

Rushing  ATT  YDS  TD  LG
A. Battle    1      1      1    1

Combine that with the awesome block he sprung on the Alex Smith 25-yard rush and he was as important as ANYBODY in winning this game.

Alex Smith's last 3 minutes - Considering how brutal he was up till then, I'll just give the game ball to his final 3 minutes!  The 49ers need a little more consistency, but I'll take the W's for now.  He may not be putting up Peyton Manning performances, but I think he's proven he's got the balls to lead this team.  He is clearly not afraid of stepping up when the moment calls for it.  He's got a lot of work to do, but I think it's safe to say he's got the mental makeup to be successful in this league.

There were plenty of stand out performers at different points in the game, so feel free to throw out your game balls.  I'll definitely have plenty to say later about the special teams coverage and the defense.  For now though, I'm happy to leave the game balls as they are.

As I said in the comments, I certainly don't think I can handle another 15 games like this.  I'm drained, exhausted and am just now winding down.  And I'd still take it every week if it meant wins.  It was hard to get excited during the preseason but that is most definitely not the case tonight.

The 49ers may not have deserved a win, but a win is a win is a win is a win.  Just repeat that mantra and I guarantee you'll at least feel a little better!  It's a short week before the 49ers head to St. Louis, but I think it's safe to enjoy this one for at least a day.

Game Ball
My game ball goes to the secondary.  Check out these numbers:

Anquan Boldin - 4 catches, 22 yards, 1 TD

Larry Fitzgerald - 3 catches, 20 yards, 0 TD

Matt Leinhart - 14 of 28, 102 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT's

Looks like that free agent money was wisely spent.

Excellent point
Clements and Lewis both stepping up big especially considering how badly the Arizona duo burned us in the past.

In my heart of hearts
I was pretending it was an intentional misspelling designed to make the name sound like "Lionheart." From there, Simpsons references. From there, peace.

But all along I knew it was probably just a misspelling.

Let's hope all of the close ones go our way! This could be a defining game for us. Of course, it could just be a defining game for the Cards...hehe.

The defense & the final couple of minutes
I thought the defense was great tonight even know there were some plays where they missed tackles on trying to stop the run you got to give a whole lot of credit to Patrick Willis, Nate Clements, Bryant Young, and Walt Harris they were all over the field.

Alex Smith was pretty bad through the whole game up until the end and he deserves some credit for helping this team takeaway the victory he threw a very nice pass to d.jackson and i was pissed when jackson (2nd to terrell owens in most drops last season) dropped that throw but now after the win i'm not as mad.

Another thing, Frank Gore had that TD early in the game and i thought he was going to have another 100+ yard game but he was only ok tonight which is kind of weird because so was Steven Jackson and so was Larry Johnson and LT didn't even perform all that well during this week 1.

It was a very ugly game especially with all those stupid penalty's in the 2nd half by the Cardinals but i will take the win.

Willis was the man
so was Battle. props to Michael Robinson for throwing a key block on that final run play. I'd also like to point out a few nasty hits by Manny Lawson. Also, Darrell Jackson stunk it up, but on the final drive he caught two key passes, including 1 for a first down, and he recovered the Battle fumble in the end zone, which would have been a touchdown if not for Ken Stabler and Dave Casper.

Also, the whole secondary was incredible. They blanketed the very good Cardinal receivers for the whole game. Walt Harris' interception was beautiful and the Shawntae game-sealing pick was a spectacular. Lastly, BY was the man, though he did get screwed by refs on that "face mask."

Lame ball to The Disease. 2 catches for 4 yards? WTF! A total non factor. Also, Mark Roman has no business taunting anyone!

Lastly, Smith was, for 57 minutes getting hammered as the O-line was quite porous. Also, the play-calling was quite unimaginative for the 57 minute dry spell, though it may have simply reflected the line-play. Really, however, the offense overall just looked plain rusty and hopefully that last drive is a sign of things to come, rather than an anomaly.

Thank You
I think you made two great points, which I'd like to expound on:
  1. Smith's performance cannot be fairly judged without taking into account the immense pressure he was under during most of the first 3 quarters. Half the time the Cards blitzed, someone came clean and was in his face before he could finish his drop. Smith was inaccurate at time to be sure, but with better protection and fewer drops we saw what he can do at the end of the game. Essentially, he threw TWO game-winning TD passes, it's just that the first was dropped. Which brings me to...
  2. How schizophrenic was Darrell Jackson tonight? He alligator-armed a ball by the goal-line and he flailed at another like he's never seen a pass before, but he also made the best catch of the night in a crucial spot. On the last drive alone he had a false start penalty (albeit a phantom call from what I can tell) and dropped the potential game-saving TD catch, but also, as Nosetackle Supreme mentioned above, caught two key passes and recovered the Battle fumble in the end zone, which literally saved the game. I can only hope he's not this much of a roller-coaster ride all year.
Oh yeah, one last thing: Patrick Willis is a heat-seeking missile. Your only hope is to pray you're not the heat he decides to seek.

Jackson
the long ball that Smith threw to Jackson in the end zone on the final drive would have been a spectacular catch. Those over the shoulder bombs aren't that easy to pull down and the defender did have an arm in there. I don't think he SHOULD have, but he certainly COULD have caught it.

I also don't think the false start penalty was solely on him. At the time it looked like it was Taylor Jacobs who jumped, but there was a lot of movement on the play and Jackson may have been the guy who was singled out. I'll have to check the replay to make sure, though.

Hostler, Smith, the O-line or the Cardinals' D?
Football's unique in that there are so many parts that it takes a number of games to figure out just how much each part goes into success and failure.

As far as the Niners' failure at offense, on the last drive the Cards put more people back in pass protection, so that suggests problems with the O-line. I'd swear that #24 was lining up our backfield. If it's a question of Wisenhunt really improving the Cards' front seven, then the Niners' offense should look better in St. Louis. When teams look like they're executing poorly, like the Niners' O did last night, that is usually because the other team is doing a good job disrupting things. The pass thrown a fraction of a second early or late, the receiver who was chipped at the line and couldn't quite get to a spot. All of these things could be the result of a good Cards defense.

As disappointed as I was with Davis, he was mostly near the line, either blocking or floating out for a checkdown. When he did go deeper Smith didn't have time. I'd like more information about the coverage on Davis and the wideouts. Does anyone remember many plays where Smith had more than a couple of seconds to look deep? Smith looked dazed out there, except for the end of the game, so it wasn't a concussion, it was a lack of time for each play.

Before the final drive how many times did the Niners throw on first down? The handoff to Gore was way too predictable, especially if you're losing the battle on the line of scrimmage. When you're losing the physical battle, then you devise strategies to regain the advantage. Maybe Hostler needs to go back up in the booth.

My diagnosis: The Cards defense right now is playing on all cylinders and a large part of the Niners not performing was on account of that. Every season even the best O lines take some time to jell, and so there's no need to panic there. The play-calling was way too conservative. Hostler did not adjust so much as Arizona began backing off the line of scrimmage in the last three minutes. Draws, screens, quick slants, keep in two backs and throw deep once in awhile. There are ways to slow down the rush. Hostler's play-calling has to improve.

good point
about the playcalling.  We were being bullrushed all night and it didn't seem like we did anything to change our playcalling to back them off.  We needed more screens and different looks on first down to keep their pass rushers honest.

Gore only caught 1 pass, and I think it's because he was so busy staying in the backfield picking up blitzers (which it seemed to me he did an admirable job of) that he could never slip out for a check down pass.

Also, what happened to Lelie?  Is he on the team still???  Was he ever on the field?  I mean, we went out and spent money on this guy and then we run out Taylor Jacobs instead?  I don't get it.

re: Gore
he did miss the block on the Smith sack/fumble in the 2nd quarter that led to the Cards' first TD and at least one of his 2 dropped passes was not due to his hand, but he took his eyes off the ball and started to run up field before he had possession.

but he did what he could with the holes he was given, which seemed to get smaller as the game wore on.

Also, it seems like they didn't run behind Larry Allen that much, except, most notably, on the Gore TD run.

Lelie
"Also, what happened to Lelie?  Is he on the team still???  Was he ever on the field?  I mean, we went out and spent money on this guy and then we run out Taylor Jacobs instead?  I don't get it."

I don't get it, either. Lelie is the one true deep threat on the team, but they'd rather send Darrell Jackson deep (just to have him blanketed), or use Jacobs as the #3 WR (just to have him drop a pass). We ought to call Jacobs "Mr. Practice" because I've never seen him display anything on the field during games to warrant him getting any playing time at all, but the coaches just love him for whatever he does behind closed doors.

194
194 total yards?  Smith looked like he was a rookie.  It's a distinct possibility that we just plain stink.  But a win over a team we couldn't beat last year is nice but what an ugly game.

I wonder
how much the pressure of Monday night got to the young players on both teams. We've seen Smith play much better than he did last night, so I'm reading very little into that performance, especially considering it's the first game of the year (so the team won't be "gelled"), that game was in the prime of prime time, and the Cardinals defense looked pretty good.

But Leinart also struggled quite a bit, and with more at his disposal.

I think we'll start to be able to feel what kind of team this is in the next couple weeks. Love the win, Spencer was great (despite the invisible pass interference), and Battle really, really looked better than ever. Does this guy ever not improve his game?

overall assessment
defense looked GREAT.  Give them a lot of credit for limiting a potentially explosive offense to some very pedestrian numbers.

Offense looked like crap.  At one point I was calling for Smith's head, saying we should have drafted Rodgers instead.  He looked awful.  In hindsight, a lot of that was because the O-Line played like garbage.  And the coaches didn't change their approach at all to help them solve Arizona's constant blitzing.  Still, Smith was terrible.  A lot of passes simply off target.  Gore did what he could with very little room to run.  Ugh, it was ugly.  Smith redeemed himself a little during that last drive, but I have to say I'm getting concerned that he's not going to get a whole lot better than what we've seen so far.  D-Jax needs to get some stickum.

My take
There's not a whole lot I'm going to say that hasn't really been said one way or another, but I thought I'd share anyway.

Defense
This team's defense showed up tonight and carried the offense for most of the game, not unlike the Ravens D did previously for Nolan.  Guys hustled and were all over the place.  They made Cardinals pay in the form of taking hits whenever the opportunities presented themselves (i.e. Willis' hit on Leinart, M.Lewis' various hits on ball carriers).  They came in with Arizona claiming they would run more, but Manusky and Nolan stuck with shutting down the pass.  I would gladly give up 100 yards rushing if I could limit the passing game to less than 130 yards, and thats exactly what they did.  All in all, it was a very solid performance, and a very solid gameplan.

B.Y. showed the entire nation (or whoever was still up in the nation watching the game) that he still has what it takes to lead his team both on AND off the field.  He was constantly the victim of holds that weren't called and a phantom penalty that was huge, but he never lost his cool.  He just stuck with it and kept on trucking.

Patrick Willis was a frickin' monster.  Someone in the game day thread mentioned that it seems like he was playing at twice the speed of everyone else, and it truly did look like that.  The two plays I really remember are: when he laid a shoulder into Leinart just as he threw the ball, and (the most memorable moment) when he came on a blitz with Arizona backed up in their own end zone and exploded on (Arizona HB) Shipp.

The DBs did an awesome job keeping the potent Arizona WRs at bay.  Praise should go all around, but I can't help but praise Shawntae Spencer.  I think he, like many other 49er defenders, was all over the place.  Someone previously said (sometime during the preseason) that all he ever does in a game is get burned, and I take exception to that.  He's a pretty good corner, and is definitely an above average #3.

Offense
The offensive unit was pretty dismal all day.  I don't think that was entirely because the offense sucked, though.  If I recall correctly, the Cardinals' front seven has been rated above average (and beyond) the past couple of years.  The reason the team has been picked as a sleeper so much is because of their defense and those three wideouts.  Injuries have killed that defense the past couple of years, and tonight we may have witnessed their full potential.  Their blitzes were almost always spot on, with at least one of their blitzers coming in untouched.  Because of this tremendous pressure, the Alex Smith was never able to get into a rhythm with his wideouts.  Without that rhythm, the Cardinals knew they had little to fear in the 49ers' passing game.

Without any fear of the passing game, of course the running game (and Frank Gore) will struggle.  To the credit of the Arizona linebackers, they covered gaps well, and played the sideline to sideline game EXTREMELY well.  Frank (and any other 49ers back) really had no chance.

Fast forward to the last three minutes of the game.  Arnaz Battle shows why no matter who the team brings in to challenge for a starting WR spot, he won't relinquish it.  The guy blocks, runs, and catches.  He's as dependable as they come in every aspect of his game.  A perfectionist, if you will.  He showed tonight (with that block on the Smith scramble, the catch and subsequent fumble and subsequent TD run) why he is a favorite around Niners Nation.  The guy is a "gamer".

Last, but definitely not least, you can't really talk about the last three minutes without talking about Alex Smith.  Throughout the game, he had little opportunity to do much with anything.  When he did have the opportunity to, he overthrew/underthrew and threw wide of his intended targets.  I'm sure somewhere inside, he wanted to redeem himself.  He definitely did that in that last drive.  Everything he did in that last drive is why Nolan drafted him first in 2005.  He showed poise.  He showed confidence.  His athletic ability at that position is exceptionally useful.  Most of all, though, he showed great awareness and cognitive skills.  He lead this team on that last drive.  He didn't do it by just taking the reins and throwing the team on his back, he did it within the confines of the gameplan.  He didn't make any mistakes, as you noticed he refused to make any errant throws.  He "managed" the game, which is all Mike Nolan has ever asked of him.  This game, coupled with that Seattle game last year, have given me (and hopefully many others) hope that there's a fighter in him.  A winning fighter.

Overall
This game was, for the most part, boring to most people.  The defensive struggle and dismal offensive showing (from both teams) made it a tough game to watch for those who love points and who love high flying acrobatics.  I like these defensive struggles.  I like watching defensive players explode, pummel, disrupt, and psych out the opposing offenses.  It was an awesome game for me from start to finish.

This is not to say it wasn't frustrating.  As much as I like defensive struggles, I hoped the 49ers' offense had done more.  I woke up this morning the most exhausted I've been in a while (since I got Madden, I think), and I chalk it up to the entire game.  It's a good kind of exhaustion though, as it ended in a very good (three minute) showing from the 49ers offense, and a victory.

There were plenty of bad to take from this game, but I'm going to focus on the good.  As the old saying goes: a win is a win is a win.  Or something like that.  I (as well as every 49ers' player and coach) will gladly take this win.  I can't wait until next weekend, as I could do this exhaustion thing over and over.

Welcome back NFL.  More importantly, welcome back 49ers football.

The only reason...
why this game was even close, is because the playcalling was TERRIBLE!  It was blatantly obvious.  There were a few execution errors of course...it is hard to go through an entire game without making a mistake.  But Hostler has got to get it going, and now.

Alex isn't quite at the point where he can go out there and call his own game. But Alex doesn't need to be Peyton Manning.  We just need him to throw the ball down field occasionally to keep defenses honest against Frank.  Frank makes life easier on Alex, this year is the time for Alex to start making life easier for Frank.  Vernon, DJax, Arnaz, Lelie... these guys are good...throw the damn ball to them!!

You have to tip your cap to Arizona's defensive schemes.  They are known as an aggressive defense, and we were not able to exploit that to our advantage.  Once they let off the pedal, we were finally able to drive down the field.  As someone else pointed out, we needed more draws, screens, bootlegs, we just needed to mix it up more.  It looked like Hostler was playing Madden '08.

Jim Hostler: Write this one down: when it is 2nd and 1, GIVE THE FUCKING BALL TO FRANK!  I mean Arizona was playing a solid defensive game against Frank, but if you cannot line up against any team and get 1 yard on 3 consecutive plays, then you do not deserve to be in the NFL.  Don't fuck it up next time.

The referees almost made me pull my hair out.  That 15 yard face mask call against BY was complete BS.  And then they turn around and call a 5 yard version when we were on offense.  You could see the anger in Nolan's eyes, he looked like he was going to go nuclear.

Patrick Willis.  Is there really anthing that needs to be said other than HUZZAH!  This kid is spectacular.  In fact the entire defense looked solid.  Aubrayo Franklin is a beast.  He holds the point very well and I liked everything I saw from him.  Although we didn't see a lot of plays from Clements, you also didn't see many plays from Anquan Boldin.  Nate basically took him out of the game.  If Shawntae fucking Spencer can come around and not be a liability on the 10 plays that we need to rest Nate or Walt, then we will be a lot better off.  In fact, if I were Singletary, the instant Shawntae comes in, I blitz from his side of the field.  Teams know when Shawntae is in there and they start throwing to his side.

All in all, a great win.  Sure, I almost had a heart attack.  But I didn't, and the Niners are 1-0.  This was clearly an "ugly" win, but considering the fact that our defense is greatly improved, we are going to be in many more ugly games.  Look at the teams with good defenses: they tend to run the ball a lot on offense.  Force feed Frank, throw DEEP every once in a while, and we will have the chance to get to the playoffs.

One more game ball: The 12th Man
this one goes to the Fans at the Stick. even though I was just watching on tv, I could tell that they were LOUD last night. I don't think I ever remember a game being that loud (at least from the TV point of view). It probably wasn't the typical wine and cheese crowd the 49ers are so famous for. It almost seemed like a Warriors type crowd.

They were responsible for several of those false start penalties on the Cardinals, which was a definite factor in the game.

i hope they can sustain that level of intensity for the duration of the season...and beyond.

Awesome
I'm not gonna repeat the obvious that everyone already said but just comment on some other minor issues.......

Brandon Moore, probably my favorite player last year, made his presence felt when he got in the game last night.  Hopefully he can get back to his old self and start beasting like he did last year.  Derek Smith did ok but looked a little lost at times last night.  If Moore proves that his pre season missed tackles were a fluke, we're back in business.

Lawson looked his best yet with a few pressures and good tackles.

I really wish Parys would have gotten in more....i think he brings great rush ability but didnt see the field much.

Staley looked good and i know smith got pressured but staley's side held strong and he did better than harris would have without a doubt

Now for Shawnte spencer.....if you read through the posts u saw sfgfan quote me on spencer.... i admit that i was really pleased to see spencer go up and take the ball (although fitzgerald stumbled) to end the game.  With that said, it was one play in the first game.  When i made those comments everyone said he was an above avg #2 corner.  Now he's an above avg #3.  That's good bc Harris showed he's not taking a seat.
