Niners Nation Prediction: 49ers win 27-21

Feel free to enter your predictions HERE

Well, after the dismay of losing Manny Lawson for the season, many of us are expecting the other shoe to drop on this 2-0 start and kick the 49ers right in the butt. While I would not be surprised at all to see that, I'm still going to predict a 49ers victory. It would be a sizable upset, but it's not completely out of the realm of possibility.

What to watch for
Left Outside Linebacker - I realize this must shock and appall the masses to think that this is a question mark. I fully expect to see Hannibal Navies manning the left side for the most part, but consider me hopeful to see some quality Brandon Moore and Parys Haralson time out there. Expect a healthy dose of Wille Parker to the left side all day. Whoever is manning that post will have to provide a reason for them to NOT do that. One person we hope can pick up some of the slack:

Patrick Willis - Considering how fast Willis is and how he flies around the field with reckless abandon, I'd love to see him helping out as much as possible. He's got his own business to worry about, but a guy like him is perfect for picking some slack by other players. Derek Smith might be closer, but he doesn't have the closing speed and tackling ability of Willis, so we'll see what happens. 3x rookie of the week anybody?

Offensive offense - I don't think there is much else to say right now in regards to the offense, both personnel-wise and play calling-wise. Maybe we'll all be stunned and amazed and see the 49ers offense put together more than one solid drive. If that happens I'm battening down the hatches and stocking up on supplies because it could be the first sign of the apocalypse.

So, maybe we get killed or maybe we sneak out of Pittsburgh with a W. I'll take the latter.

GO NINERS!

[EDITOR'S NOTE 11:25AM] 14-6 Pittsburgh at the half - The offense showed some signs of life but got nothing more than a couple field goals. The defense looked really good and the Steelers can thank some lame penalties for that second touchdown. 49ers are hanging tough but the first Steelers possession of the 2nd half is gonna be HUGE.

Well, it's unanimous among the experts. The Niners will get creamed today. No one that I can find says the Niners will win.

Let's see.

I was calling half of the plays down the drive.
It is so obvious what we should do, and when we execute it is beautiful.  They keyed on VD at the end of the drive, so he isn't going to be your TD recipient most of the time.  That is where Arnaz and DJax should get some time and space.

Not a bad 1st drive, but we need to throw a TD.

Oh well, again
The O-line hasn't been keeping the rush out, Smith is bailing too soon (maybe he should have run to the left for some yards on a couple of those pressures), Lelie has showed us why he's not playing much.

They have to keep feeding Gore the ball, because on one of those plays he could break one and take it to the house. The problem is that there's no push by the line. Maybe a draw. Something to give him some space.

The kickoff return was unfortunate, but the defense has been playing inspired ball. A little light against the run, but still okay.

Need some breaks and some turnovers to make this  game winnable. Roethlisberger needs a concussion about now.

Why would we not go for it
when we need 2 scores?

Do we want to force our guys into a stress must score 2 times in 6 minutes situation?

Yeah...
I think I'll just put the team on hold for a while longer.  I hated the Smith pick.  I can't stand ownership.  I liked the Nolan signing but not any more.

I am going back to my waiting for ownership to change to give a shit.

The team should be turning some of these plays in touchdowns, but considering some of the referee's calls, the 49ers have stayed in this thing...Ownership doesn't spend money and people bitch...then they do spend money and people still bitch???

Success
Obviously, part of the success on that last drive was from the Steelers dropping back into coverage, but those things, throwing deep and having Smith run when things start falling apart, work. If they did this earlier in the game there might have been a chance.

I tell you, I think Frank Gore would have the right to get into the faces of those linemen.

The D is tired
but it'll give the offense a chance to run some more deep patterns.

On the good side, St. Louis is 0-3. At this moment Arizona is still losing and Leinart's out. Let's hope Baltimore hangs on and Seattle loses.
