Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

49ers OC interests might actually lie with Chan Gailey, NOT Mike Martz

And so things now get interesting.  The search for an offensive coordinator has taken a twist in only a matter of hours.  I didn't see if myself but Adam Schefter is reporting the 49ers are not interested in Mike Martz, but are actually interested in Chan Gailey to be their next offensive coordinator.  Nolan and Gailey were assistants together in Denver in the late 80s and early 90s so there is a relationship to build upon.  Additionally, Rotoworld has similar information posted regarding the lack of interest in Mike Martz with John Clayton reporting he "apparently didn't fit" the criteria of 49ers brass.

I am in the camp that is against Mike Martz as offensive coordinator for a variety of reasons that apparently don't matter now.  I'm trying to get more information on Chan Gailey, as the extent of my Gailey knowledge revolves around his brief tenure as Cowboys head coach.  I've emailed the SB Nation Georgia Tech blogger for any information he might have on Gailey and what he brings to and takes away from the table as a coach.  Any insight is certainly welcome in the comments below.

In a completely unrelated, but equally important note, the polls are open for the Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Year.  The nominees are Patrick "Bamm-Bamm" Willis, Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch, Dwayne Bowe and Joe Thomas.  Peterson is coming off being named Offensive Rookie of the Year and Patrick Willis seems a lock to be named Defensive Rookie of the Year tomorrow.  I've voted once and Willis currently has 77% of the vote.  I'm guessing there haven't been too many votes so far.  Peterson is certainly worthy of the award, but really, we all know Willis deserves just as much, if not more.

Well, heading over to the Rambling Racket, that SB Nation G-Tech blog, it looks like they are having problems with Gailey. It's pretty harsh, in reality.
" It's time to can Chan Gailey and promote John Tenuta before someone else hires him. Certainly he can find an OC to complement his defense. With a new Athletic Director in the fold he will want to make his own hire. Chan better get his resume updated, maybe SW Missouri St needs a coach."

Cameron Fired
It's time to go after Cam.

Billick vs Cameron
Most of us are familiar with Nolan's affinity for aquiring the Raven's discarded players. I hope that doesn't hold true for coaches. Faced with the possibility of hiring Billick as OC, I begin to see Cam in a much brighter light. Nevermind Billick's Super Bowl ring, what he did with the Raven's offense this season was almost as bad as what Hostler did with the Niner's. I know Billick didn't have many weapons but his decisions to pass on 4th and 1 are too reminiscent of...well...you know.
Is a suit still considered a suit if it is made by Reebok?

Billick
Billick has never had a good, not great but good, QB.  Please do not bring that weak sauce Trent Dilfer into the arguement (he was never better than league average).

Wait a minute.  I was going to offer some insight on why the Niners should at least entertain the thought of Billick but I can't subject him to 2 years of Alex Smith, that's just inhumane.

Billick's fault
The Ravens reportedly gave Billick free reign to go out and choose which QB's to draft and sign in free agency. These are the ones he chose to acquire: Scott Mitchell, Tony Banks, Chris Redman, Elvis Grbac, Stoney Case, Kyle Boller, and Steve McNair. Oh, and he also signed Derek Anderson, but cut him in the preseason. So, who's fault is it that he never has a good QB?

I understand that
My comment was more or less a joke about how Billick's been plagued by crappy QB's his entire career and how if he came to SF, as the team is currently constructed, he'd continue to be plagued by crappy QBs and not a validation of Billick's "genius".

Billick
Lost his locker room. Bad idea to bring him to the powderkeg here. We should bring back the BW WCO that took an also-ran team and made it a dynasty, and that's where we should be focusing our search for an OC.

Willis...
Willis now has 38% of the vote to Peterson's 28%.  I hope Willis wins, because while Peterson is extremely talented, pretty much every RB in the NFL wishes they were running behind Steve Hutchinson (just ask Shaun Alexander if he misses him).
