49ers Free Agent Round-up: Dontarrious Thomas

EDITOR'S UPDATE 1:35AM - I just came across Matt Barrow's thoughts on Thomas over at the Sacramento Bee. Check it out at the end.
One day down and the 49ers were plenty active. Rather than go into great detail about our new 2nd string running back, DeShaun Foster, or our new 3rd string quarterback, J.T. O'Sullivan, I thought I'd primarily discuss Dontarrious Thomas. While there will be plenty to discuss about the other signings, Thomas is the one guy that most of us don't know much about, or what kind of impact he can provide.
So, I spoke with Chris over at Daily Norseman, our Minnesota Vikings blog. He had some interesting thoughts on Dontarrious Thomas:
I also found his Scouts, Inc. scouting report over at ESPN.com:
From Matt Barrow's Sac Bee blog (check his blog out throughout the day for further info):

You sort of nailed it.
Derek Smith was a dependable steed. He knew what he had to do and he did it. The strong-side ILB, which is where Smith (and Moore was supposed to have) played isn't supposed to be the tackle hog. They take on the lead blockers so that the weak-side LB can come in to make the play. Moore couldn't grasp that and was thus benched.
He wasn't benched out-right, though. He was still playing DE on passing downs to rush the QB, a position he thrived in the previous season. When he wasn't succeeding in that, he was slowly pushed out and eventually was stuck on special teams duty.
With that said and done, I think he's got the opportunity to come back this year. Thomas's contract doesn't guarantee him a spot, and Nolan extended Moore's contract for a reason. Nolan sees things he likes in Moore, but Moore's got to develop into a better player. It'll be interesting to see how those two duke it out during minicamps and OTAs.

It's all a matter of situation...
Could he provide a spark on the outside? Perhaps. But I also happen to believe that Parys Haralson is capable of the same kind of spark.

Justin Smith
So I guess this means our first priority in the draft will probably be an offensive lineman, which makes sense in a year that has a lot of talent in that position.
So far with Foster, Rossum, Bruce and Smith, I think the 49ers are having a good off season.
