2008 SBN Mock Draft: 49ers select......

The pick is up at Mocking the Draft.

I decided to go with Gosder Cherilus for a couple of reasons. First, he is probably the safest pick for the 49ers at this point in terms of immediately starting and producing combined with long term ability. Second, the 49ers desperately need to solidify their offensive line and this could put them in a good position to have it set for quite some time.

It's not the most shocking pick, but rather a combination of what I think the 49ers will do and what I think is the best pick to contribute right away.  Some will agree, some will disagree.  I realize this is a mock and I can do whatever I want, but I felt it necessary to consider what would improve the 49ers next year and into the long-term future.

Matt Miller, NN reader and proprietor of Mocking the Draft and New Era Scouting gave us an A-. It might be a bit tinted in red and gold glasses, but I personally think this is a solid pick. Check out Matt's thoughts at Mocking the Draft.

Hmm.
Not a flashy pick, but a solid one.  Lets hope Groves is available at #39.

Like it
I like the pick.  For what it's worth, the voting public at MTD agree.  Currently 80% say it was a good pick.
We are not who I thought we were.

public opinion
I think it's harder for people to be critical of an offensive line pick.  It's not sexy, but it's safe and solid.  If we had grabbed a WR or even possibly Groves, I think the poll would be a little more split.

solid pick
I'm new to this site but I really like it. So, question is u repaired the right tackle which is really a good but how about the right guard? The right guard and center is where we almost got our qb's beheaded. I looked at the rest of the draft picks(I know our needs are many)but didn't see a center or guard(Otah or Crummey, Coleman)ur thoughts!

Center
I think that Center isn't as big a problem as last season made it look. Last year Heitmann was very likely still recovering from his disgustingly broken leg of the year before. He should be completely recovered from that now and back to full speed. On top of that, David Baas, and I believe Wragge, can both play Center in a pinch and neither one is a particular slouch.

I like the pick a lot
I think we have to draft line on the first day. I think it's our biggest immediate need and our most important long-term need. The pick here could have conceivably gone either way, as there will be both tackles and linebackers of similar quality to Cherilus and Groves when the second pick comes, but since I believe the line is the more immediate need, and the first pick has to be the more immediate pick, that this was the right way to go.

So that'll make it a linebacker in round 2? I can live with that.

The way I see it we've got 4 LB to pick from
Connor, Mayo, Groves, & Crable.
Here's to hoping Albert Hanyesworth stomps on Alex Smith's head.

or
if theres a value wr (devin thomas, maybe manningham though im not personally a big fan) or another o-lineman (chilo rachal, carl nicks)  i wouldnt be completely opposed to waiting til the 3rd or 4th to get an olb/pass rusher and grabbing bruce davis from ucla.  id love to see a young o-line with staley, nix, and cherilus as anchors for the next decade.

Hmm.
Maybe I'm just overly fascinated by Groves, but I don't really think there's a really close comparable (in terms of fit at 3-4 OLB) that's projected as a high second rounder.

linebacker
The plan is to go linebacker.  We've got Groves, Connor and Mayo and if one of them were there I'd jump on them.

what if
devin thomas or carl nix are still there?

Crable
Why is Matt Miller so high on Crable?  From what I've read he's like a 2-3 round tweener but Miller has him as like his 4th best overall prospect remaining and he does fit the 3-4 OLB mold.  And if Matt is so high on him why aren't we even considering him in the 2nd?

Crable
I really think it just depends on who you talk to.  Crable has a substantial bit of physical/natural ability, which is something a lot of scouts are high on.  The scouts that are down on him are down on his ability to read and react, or lack thereof.  I guess you can say he's a pretty raw talent, so some scouts may think he needs a lot more work than other scouts do.

I think that I'd rather have Mayo or Connor to play the Ted and scheme with two elite ILBs, though.  They sound like they're more "NFL ready."  Needless to say, I think I really want Groves in the second if he's still there.

Fair Enough
Connor is already taken.  So that leaves Groves and Mayo with like 9 picks to go.  I think there's a pretty good chance Mayo and Groves get picked prior to our 2nd.  If that's the case I'd look hard at Devin Thomas (if he's still on the board which I doubt) and Crable.

BTW
Fooch, do you have any idea when the football blogs changeover to the new SB? Just wonderin'.

April-mayish...
I'm hoping before the draft, but I'd expect probably afterwards.  The powers that be got all the baseball blogs switched and are taking a couple weeks to see how things operate as is...I'll throw up a more informative post so everyone knows what's up as I learn more.  If things go quickly before the draft, but probably after the draft.

I went to the Giants game last night
and Chris Long was there with Rob Ryan, defensive coordinator for the Raiders. Considering reports on ESPN that the Dolphins are negotiating a contract with JAKE Long, I thought this was interesting.

by Rocktopus on Apr 10, 2008 5:17 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

They're negotiating with Gholston too.
They're likely to negotiate with both Long and Gholston to see if the magnitude of the contracts will help facilitate their decision.
Here's to hoping Albert Hanyesworth stomps on Alex Smith's head.
