49ers 2008 Schedule Released

While we've known the opponents for some time, we now get a chance to pour over the complete schedule, day-by-day.  There will be plenty of time to break down each matchup, but for now, I've thrown up a poll to get initial predictions.  The 49ers still have to go through the draft, mini-camps, training camp and the preseason, but it's always interesting to get that initial gut reaction.  According to ESPN, the 49ers 2008 opponents' cumulative winning percentage from last year was .484 and they were 124-132.  So, here's your San Francisco 49ers 2008 schedule:

September 7 - vs. Arizona

September 14 - @ Seattle

September 21 - vs. Detroit

September 28 - @ New Orleans

October 5 - vs. New England

October 12 - vs. Philadelphia

October 19 - @ NY Giants

October 26 - vs. Seattle

November 2 - BYE

November 9 - @ Arizona - MNF

November 16 - vs. St. Louis

November 23 - @ Dallas

November 30 - @ Buffalo

December 7 - vs. NY Jets

December 14 - @ Miami

December 21 - @ St. Louis

December 28 - vs. Washington

2008 schedule
I actually prefer that all their games not be televised nationally. That way, as a Sunday Ticket subscriber, I get all my money's worth.

---

Guys, I am a little concerned about the strength of this schedule. I mean, last year we couldn't beat Atlanta or Baltimore etc..

I understand that that was last season, and many a change has already been made. Still though, if this team doesn't address the mental aspect of the game that plagued us last season, we don't stand a chance.

optimistic prediction  = 7-9
pessimistic prediction = 1-15 (2008's version of the Dolphins)

Wow
My rose colored glasses are back on like nobody's business, and I think it's realistic (rose colored realistic) that we could win 9 games on this schedule without much of a stretch. NYJ, Miami, Buffalo, Arizona, Detroit, New Orleans (suck it, Sean Payton), some splits with Seattle and St. Louis... Maybe catch Philly in a McHurt week... Jason Campbell...

Lots of opportunities for wins here. And with an offense that I imagine will be MUCH improved in all areas, I'm feeling the preseason irrational faith! Go draft! Go 49ers! Go speed and defense!

Oh wait... speed and....

Errr, well, it's a strategy that actually works in football, and a Martzian offense is a speedy one! Full speed and defense ahead!

I keep reliving the moment when Steve Young almost fell down... over and over....

I smashed my glasses
I smashed my rose colored glasses when the Niners couldn't beat the Ravens, who had 3 rookies playing on the o-line. To qoute Frank Costanza, "That is in-ex-cus-able!"

And not just to you HTS, but to anyone else reading this. Don't give me that crap about not having a pass rush either. We could have unleashed Bam Bam on them, but we chose not to.

Also, deep within my being, next to my colon somewhere, I think, lies the part of me that believes this team can make the playoffs. Rose colored glasses or not. But until this team quits self imploding game in and out, I'm not going to hold my breath.

Willis
If you give me the choice between keeping Willis in every play by letting him just read and react, or forcing him into a play that may not exist by blitzing him, I'll take the read and react every time.  He's an inside linebacker, and (if all goes well) will be one of the league's best in no time.  There are a lot of gripes a fan can have with the 49ers coaching, but not involving Willis in blitzes shouldn't be one of them.

We had 0 sacks
No where did I say "every play." All I said was we should have unleashed Willis or anyone for that matter. Christ man, they had 3 rookies playing on the o-line in that game. We had 0 sacks. Willis, Smith, Banta-Cain, I don't care send one of them bastards on a blitz and get to the qb. Also if Nolan doesn't want his d-line to get into the backfield, he wants them to hold their position or whatever, then who the hell is supposed to get sacks if we don't blitz the lbs?

9 points
You're complaining about the defense in a game in which they gave up 9 points?  I really don't care how many sacks we had if we only gave up 9 points, it's irrelevant at that point.
We are not who I thought we were.

I'm gonna shut up now.

Agreed
The way I see it, there are only three teams on our schedule we have no business beating:

New England
Dallas
Giants (probably, although I'm skeptical of how good they actually are)

Obviously, we will lose more games than that, but I don't see any other teams that we shouldn't be able to play with.

We are not who I thought we were.

Into the bye-week...
If the 9ers are at .500 going into the bye week, I'll be thrilled, and it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to imagine a winning season materializing.  I'd be surprised if they were to win more than 9 games, though.

Record               Likelihood
best case 10-6    10%
worst case 6-10   30%
my pick 8-8         70%

What's bizarre is that I'm pretty excited about the season and yet I'm only expecting a 3-game improvement in wins.  Perhaps my excitement derives from the hope that the offensive proficiency would turn up as something other than perpetually putrid...

Playoffs baby!!
11-5... finally we have a clue on offense.. Defense was never a problem and we got plenty of people ready to show off against old teams: Martz (STL&DET), Bruce (STL), Johnson (ARI), Clements (BUF), Lewis (PHI),  TBC (NE)

Another thing to think about:
J.Jones (SEA)- Soft- running game suffers
The run is crucial to west coast offenses

STL secondary sucks: BAM BAM and Co. will take care of the rest.

Arizona defense depleted, QB play has been sketchy

Mia/Jets/Det- O and D suck

BUF, No Run Defense: Gore should have a good day

Washington- No Gibbs, No Taylor less confident bunch

Maybes: PHI- Old Defense/ no wideouts
NYG- Good Dline not so good secondary, offense won't be playing against slow lbs:
see 2007 NE

Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.
