Day 1 was a little more low key for the 49ers this year. They snagged Kentwan Balmer, a guy who could conceivably be a nose tackle or a defensive end. They also grabbed Chilo Rachal, a guy who looks to compete for one of the starting guard spots in training camp.
So now we arrive at Day 2 and the question is now, where do the 49ers go from here? Balmer appears to be more of a run-stopper meant to open up spots for the linebacking crew, so maybe McNolan will be looking for a pass rusher on Day 2. I'd see that as more of an outside linebacker than another defensive lineman. Considering we'll see a defensive line of some combination of Justin Smith, Aubrayo Franklin, Isaac Sopoaga, Kentwan Balmer, Ray McDonald,. Ronnie Fields and Joe Cohen among others, I don't see another defensive lineman entering the fray. Another offensive lineman would be useful, and possibly a wide receiver as well. The 49ers have 4 picks remaining (3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th rounds), so hopefully they can make things happen with those picks. One option is of course to move back in the 3rd or 4th round to pick up picks, but I honestly would rather just go best available with what we've got. I'd still like to see them draft Lavelle Hawkins. Consider him my 2008 Jay Moore. Nonetheless I'll guess the 49ers go OT, WR, OLB, DB with their remaining 4 picks, although not necessarily in that order.
Round 3 gets underway 10am eastern time, 7am local time and considering it's now 1:20, there is no way in hell I'll be up for the start. I've set my TiVo and there will certainly be plenty of coverage online. If some of you East Coast Niners fans, and of course the West Coast early risers see who the 49ers grab in the 3rd round and can find some YouTube highlights or random links about the guy, feel free to put up a Fan Shot. We've gotten a few up about Balmer and Rachal and the more the merrier. See you in the am and let's hope for some big things with the 49ers.
