I'm creating this FanPost to put to bed some factual data around the argument that teams NEED to select quarterbacks in the first round of the draft in today's NFL. The opinions have been thrown out there, but now let's look at a few hard, cold facts after the jump.
21 teams have selected a QB in the 1st round of the draft from the years 2000 to 2009.
Of those 21 teams, only 3 have reached a Super Bowl with a QB that they drafted in the 1st round (PIT - Roethlisberger, NYG - Manning, CHI - Grossman).
26 QB's have been selected in the 1st round of the draft from the years 2000 to 2009.
Of those 26 QB's, only 8 have started an NFL playoff game in their careers.
Other noteworthy facts:
Of the last 10 Super Bowls, 7 of the 20 teams have featured a 1st round QB that they selected in the draft.
Of the last 10 Super Bowls, 11 of the 20 teams have featured a QB that they selected in any round of the draft.
I'll let you be the judge.
