Charlie Whitehurst and the NFC West

Normally I wouldn't do a front page story on a deal for a backup QB. However both the Seahawks and Cardinals are talking to Charlie Whitehurt's agent about a deal. Our fellow SBN Nation blog Field Goals says that the Seahawks have made him an offer. The Seahawks don't have a 3rd rounder this year so can't give that to the Chargers but have been rumored to offer the equivalent, possibly a swap of 2nd round picks.

Whitehurst has had less than a stellar NFL career. He was a 3rd round pick in the 2006 NFL draft and has not taken any snaps since then (not even in the pre-season). However he has been sitting behind Phillip Rivers his entire career, so that's not exactly surprising. He had a stellar career with the Clemson Tigers though, so that's what we'll focus on.

Charlie's first starts for the Clemson Tigers were at the end of the 2001 season. He ended up being a 4 year starter for the Tigers. Even more impressive he graduated in 3 years with his degree in marketing. He had a pretty impressive career as a college QB. When he was drafted scouts were saying that he was an old-fashioned pocket passer who was wildly erratic, and his year-to-year stats seem to bear that out.

QBs taken in the same draft include Matt Leinart, Vince Young, Jay Cutler, Brodie Coyle, Tarvaris Jackson and Bruce Gradkowski. He's got a lot of physical tools and should earn a chance to compete for a starting job next year with either the Seahawks or the Cardinals.
