Welcome back for another evening of Niners Nation After Dark. The 2011 NFL Combine starts in about six or so hours, but the Combine party is already starting here and we've got the gambling to prove it! Over the next week you'll get a chance watch or read about players running 40 yard dashes, seeing what they can bench press, and testing how high they can leap. While some may find that sufficiently exciting, for the rest of us, NFL Combine prop bets are the name of the game.
The folks at Bodog have put together a rundown of various odds you can wager on over the course of the week. They've got over/under on fastest 40-yard dash, highest vertical leap, and most bench press repetitions. Additionally you can wager on which of two players will do better in a given category. For example, you can wager whether Auburn QB Cameron Newton or Virginia Tech QB Tyrod Taylor will have the faster 40 time. Newton is -130, while Taylor is even money. They also have Newton versus California University (Pennsylvania) QB Josh Portis (transferred there from Maryland), with Portis as the favorite at -130 to Newton's even money.
I don't plan on wagering on these particular offerings but I'll provide updates on all these bets after the Combine is completed. Best of luck if you're going to throw down some cash on these bets, although this might be the sign you have a gambling problem (definitely not such a sign if you bet on Christina Aguilera's Super Bowl National Anthem. Nope, not at all).
In a semi-related story, when I was over in London for the 49ers-Broncos game I took in an Arsenal soccer match the day before. The highlight of the game was their 88th minute goal to win 1-0. The second highlight was the booth they had set up where you could bet before and during the game. A buddy and I put down money on I believe a 3-1 Arsenal win. It amazed me how easy it was to just throw down a few bucks if you wanted. Heaven forbid we allow that in America!
