The 49ers announced a pair of coaching hires today that have some interest. The 49ers hired Reggie Davis as tight ends coach and Peter Hansen as defensive assistant/quality control coach. David spent the last three seasons as running backs coach at Oregon State and was running backs coach at UNLV prior to that. He actually played with Coach Jim Harbaugh for two seasons with the San Diego Chargers. He also coached under Harbaugh at the University of San Diego.
Peter Hansen spent the last two years as a defensive assistant on the Stanford Cardinal coaching staff. According to the 49ers he worked with Vic Fangio "in film breakdown, scouting reports and practice preparation." He previously worked as a strength and conditioning intern for the Cardinal, in 2008.
Although Davis is coming in as tight ends coach, it's interesting to note his work with running back Jacquizz Rodgers. I don't know if this would make the 49ers any more or less likely to draft a guy like Rodgers. The reports indicate Brian Westbrook is unlikely to return to the 49ers next season. Rodgers is a talented running back, although his numbers did take a hit this season. He finished with his lowest total yards and yards per rush in 2010. He is currently ranked 13th overall by Scouts Inc and 16th by Draft Countdown. Draft Tek includes a ranking of 3rd for Rodgers in a change of pace role.
Is Jacquizz Rodgers a decent later option to compete with Anthony Dixon for carries behind Frank Gore? Whether the hiring of Reggie Davis actually would affect that or not, he could at least provide some up-close scouting on Rodgers.
