Last week I introduced the Niners Nation 2011 Mock Draft Database of 49ers second round draft predictions. It was a bit all over the place in terms of players and positions, although positions focused in on just a few. Defensive line and cornerback dominated the conversation, although there were few specific options that carried over from mock to mock.
We're back this week with the latest edition of the 2011 NFL Mock Draft database of second round picks and there are some interesting changes. Defensive line still dominates the mocks, as does the front seven overall. However, we've had one player emerge across multiple mocks in the former of Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder. This is particularly interesting given Tre9er's post yesterday about Ponder and his rising stock.
The quarterback position is one of great necessity for the 49ers but this year's draft class leaves something to be desired. And if the 49ers are ever able to acquire a QB via trade or free agency it might also affect the rounds in which they consider a QB. At this point it seems like you just look for value at some point. If it means you don't take a quarterback until the fourth or fifth round, so be it. I don't mind maybe reaching a few spots for a QB, but if you're taking one 30 picks before he should probably be drafted just because you think you need a quarterback, you're only setting yourself up for failure.
