We're back for another round of 2011 NFL Pro Days leading up to the NFL Draft. Arizona was the only school in action this weekend, but we get back on track with eight schools today. Your Pro Days today will include Air Force, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, LSU, Montana, Newberry, Wake Forest, and the mighty Pioneers of Widener. While there are a mix of decent prospects working out today, we all know what today is about: LSU CB Patrick Peterson. He's far and away the best player working out today, and really he qualifies as one of the best players in the draft.
Although I can't speak for Jim Harbaugh and Trent Baalke I'd have to imagine the 49ers would jump all over him with the seventh overall pick. Most people seem to agree that he's the pick for the 49ers if he falls to seven. Whether he is a shutdown corner in the mold of a Champ Bailey or Nnamdi Asomugha remains to be seen, but folks like this guy. Now we just have to say if he's done too much during the draft season and boosted his stock too high. In looking over the six teams picking in front of the 49ers, there are defensive needs on several of the teams. A lot of folks seem to think Denver is the place he'll go in spite of their recent extension they gave Champ Bailey. You can never have enough great cornerbacks so I don't think that's entirely out of the realm of possibility.
The other possibility is somebody behind the 49ers trading up to grab Peterson, particularly if it is appearing that he might drop out of the top five. Is there anybody out there you could see leaping up ahead of the 49ers to try and grab Peterson? The Patriots aren't this kind of team but they've certainly got the haul to trade up from their Raiders pick at 17. I'm not saying they're going to make the move, but in all the discussion about Peterson I don't know how much folks have considered whether teams behind the 49ers want him just as badly. Maybe we see a bidding war develop.
