2011 NFL Pro Days: Temple Defensive End Muhammad Wilkerson And the 2011 NFL Draft

Today's 2011 NFL Pro Days are rather quiet as we have a variety of small schools taking the field across the country. Today's NFL Pro Days consist of Arkansas State, Indiana State, New Mexico State, Northwestern State (LA), Temple, and Virginia Union. There's not a lot of talent in the pool of players today, but the Temple Owls have an intriguing player the 49ers might have some interest in.

Defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson is a guy who could potentially be a long terms solution at left defensive end. Scouts Inc lists him as a defensive end but it sounds like he could work as either a 3-4 defensive end or a 4-3 defensive tackle. Scouts Inc ranks him as the fifth best defensive end, Mocking the Draft only ranks him as a defensive tackle (No. 6), and Draft Tek ranks him as the fifth best 3-4 defensive end. He weighed in at 315 pounds and according to Scouts Inc he could add some bulk if necessary. They say he brings quality effort play-to-play and seem to like his ability both in the pass rush and against the run:

Pass: Consistently fires off the ball and gets into the pads of OL. Strong at point of attack. Can stack and shed as well as any five-technique in this class. Has great size with good lower-body strength and excellent upper body power. Can anchor versus the run but is also very adept at finding the ball, disengaging, pursuing and making the play.

Run: Power rusher. Will stand up OL and can bull rush him back into the QB. Finds the ball faster than most five-technique's, shows ability to shed quickly and has adequate-to-good closing burst for a 300-pound DL.

Wilkerson is projected anywhere from the middle of the first round to early in the second round. Is this a guy who the 49ers grab if he slips? Or is he worth a move up? I don't think the 49ers make a trade to grab a defensive end given other needs, but this kind of talent is impressive.
