2011 NFL Pro Days: Mark Herzlich And 49ers Positions Of No Need

We're back for March 23, 2011 NFL Pro Days. Today's Pro Days include Arizona State, Boston College, Central Florida, Connecticut, East Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee-Chattanooga, and Texas State. There aren't any huge name prospects out there today, but a few interesting ones worth a look. The most "intriguing" prospect would have to be Boston College outside linebacker Mark Herzlich. He had a fairly quiet year, although he did notch four interceptions with the Eagles. The reason I mention him is because he came back this season after being diagnosed in mid-2009 with a rare form of cancer called Ewing's sarcoma.

Herzlich does not strike me as a guy the 49ers would draft, but I've seen his name mentioned off and on in threads. He played outside linebacker at BC but seems more suited as either a 4-3 OLB or a 3-4 ILB. Conceivably he could fill the Ted role, but it seems like NaVorro Bowman will get first crack at that job if Takeo Spikes walks this offseason. I wish Herzlich the best of luck, but I'm not seeing him on the 49ers radar at this point. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

The only other particularly notable players today (as far as the 49ers are likely concerned) are Arizona State defensive tackle Lawrence Guy, UConn running back Jordan Todman, and East Carolina WR Dwayne Harris. There were some offensive tackles in the bunch and that got me thinking. Is offensive tackle even on the 49ers draft list at this point? The team selected Anthony Davis in the first round last year and signed Joe Staley to a long contract extension not too long ago. Throw in Alex Boone likely competing for the swing position in camp and it just seems like there's no need to spend a draft choice on an offensive tackle.

Whether you agree or disagree with me on that, are there any other positions that the team is set at and has no need in the draft? Punter would be on the list, and maybe tight end? Not much else beyond that as far as I can tell.
