49ers QB Coach Geep Chryst: From Coaching Jim Harbaugh To Working For Jim Harbaugh

In mid-January, 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh added Geep Chryst to his staff as quarterbacks coach. Chryst came over from Carolina where he had worked for five seasons as tight ends and offensive quality control coach. Prior to that he spent six years working with quarterbacks with the Arizona Cardinals and San Diego Chargers. It's worth noting that he was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Chargers in 1999 and 2000, when Jim Harbaugh was wrapping up his QB career.

I bring all this up as a way of introducing the 49ers new video series at the team website called Coach 'Em Up. The video series will take a look at each of the assistant coaches under Jim Harbaugh to help fans learn more about them. The first video is about Chryst and you can read a narrative of the video as well. We'll post a little something over the coming weeks as these videos are posted at 49ers.com.

Chryst is in a fairly unique situation where he is now working for a man he once coached. I'd imagine it's not the first time this has happened, but it's still an interesting twist for this new coaching staff. For the most part Harbaugh has an incredibly experienced coaching staff. However, the QB coach is going to be in an interesting position because Harbaugh has indicated an intent to get involved when it comes to his quarterbacks. It remains to be seen how involved that will be, but given his work with Andrew Luck and Josh Johnson in college, I have to think he'll be busy with the 49ers quarterbacks.

The dynamic between Harbaugh and Chryst will be an interesting one to follow once the 49ers can get to OTAs, minicamps, and training camp. Harbaugh is the man in charge but how will he utilize Chryst? At the very least, It is a big help that they have a previous working relationship.
