Over the last few weeks, I've noticed some comments that have left me wondering a few things. Yesterday I saw some comments talking about how Isaac Sopoaga is not a good defensive end and needs to be replaced. In the days and weeks leading up to the draft, I recall some comments about how he was a very solid defensive end. This came when folks were talking about JJ Watt and Cameron Jordan as possible first round picks. Some folks felt there was no need for them because the 49ers had bigger needs and Sopoaga was fine opposite Justin Smith.
I've now reached a point where I'd like to hear arguments from both sides. Given the grunt type nature of the defensive end position in the 3-4 defense, I had thought Sopoaga was perfectly fine at the position. Justin Smith has turned the position into an area of dominance, but it seemed like Sopoaga has been fine. Of course, given the 49ers OLB struggles in the pass rush, maybe Sopoaga really hasn't done enough to open holes for the OLB to get through.
At this point I don't really know. I suppose that would mean I think he's just "rated." Given that we have people who are very clearly on each side of the argument, I'd love to hear both sides on this.
