Over the last couple weeks I've rolled out an open thread on Friday afternoon to discuss a particular random topic unrelated to the 49ers. Two weeks ago we discussed Five Guys vs. In 'N Out and last week discussed favorite sports movies. This thread is not meant as a replacement for our Official Community Thread, but more as a complement to it.
For today, I'm curious about people's reading habits on the Internet. I'm always on the lookout for quality writing so I'm curious what sites people enjoy whether it be sports-related or otherwise. More specifically for the timing of this post, I was curious how many people have had a chance to check out Grantland.com? For those who haven't heard of it, it's basically an extension of ESPN with Bill Simmons acting as editor-in-chief.
The subject idea is to mix sports and pop culture, but it seems mostly like an opportunity for Simmons to bring together writers he enjoys reading and letting them provide more long-form content. The rundown of writers involved is really impressive so it should make for some interesting reads. Of course, I remain a Bill Simmons fan so the fact that he's now written four posts since the site launched on Wednesday pleases me. I can't imagine he'll keep up the pace, but I'll take what I can get.
Some reviews of the site wonder if it's a necessary extension given that it's mostly similar to what could be seen on the artist formerly known as Page 2. It seems to be an attempt to be edgy while remaining under the protective umbrella of the world wide leader. Somewhere someone made the comparison to what Miramax was to Disney before being sold in 2010.
Three days in, what do people think about Grantland? Thumbs up, thumbs down, or TTBD (thumb to be determined)?
