It's safe to say this week will be a rollercoaster of emotion. Just as 49ers fans are ready to jump off the cliff in light of the news that David Baas is joining Takeo Spikes on the first train out of town, Michael Lombardi drops these two little gem:
Jets main competition for Asomuga right now are the 49ers, they are in it strong...will be interesting to see how it plays out...
I am sure Houston is involved as well in Asomugha, but it sounds like SF and NY are in the lead right now..
The 49ers chances of signing Nnamdi Asomugha would seem to increase considerably if they cut the cord and say good bye to Nate Clements. The 49ers could re-work Clements deal and retain him, or they could just send him packing and make their play for a top-tier cornerback. Nnamdi is the best guy on the market, plain and simple. Of course there are some excellent options that might very well be the 1b to Nnamdi's 1a in some minds.
Losing guys like Spikes and Baas hurts in the short term, but also frees up budgeted cap space now. Once free agency is over and done with, the questions will become how valuable the 49ers adds were compared to their minuses. If they add a guy like Nnamdi Asomugha, the add column gets a significant check added to it. They have some other holes still to fill, but backing up the Brink's truck for Nnamdi would certainly soften the blow.
Letting the excitement and unrealistic expectations commence.
