While we sit here considering the various cornerbacks still sitting on the free agent market, the 49ers are actually starting sort of real practices at training camp today. Thursday was spent checking in, getting physicals, conducting conditioning drills and other administrative matters. Among other things, the 49ers placed Michael Crabtree, Dominique Zeigler and Bruce Miller on the Active/Physically Unable To Perform List. The players count against the team's 90-man limit and can be activated from the list any time prior to the final cuts of training camp.
Additionally, the 49ers released Joe Nedney and Eric Heitmann due to failed physicals. I'm not positive but I think this administrative move could conceivably allow the 49ers to place Eric Heitmann on injured reserve, but I'm not positive. Neither player is a surprise on this front, but given their lengthy veteran status I think it's worth noting these moves.
Friday, however, is when practices can begin. The new CBA dictates the first two days of practices cannot be padded so they'll be at least a little limited. I was watching some footage of Broncos camp and the players were in helmets and shorts so I'm guessing the 49ers will mix some of that in.
The 49ers went through conditioning drills yesterday and players had a chance to meet up with their position coaches. Offensive players had some access to playbooks this offseason, but I'd imagine even those guys have received original copies. Defensive players did not receive playbooks this offseason so they are now busy soaking up the Vic Fangio defense. It will be interesting to see what the team starts to install on this first real day of practices.
One important note for this year's camp is media tweeting will not be allowed from the practice field. Tweeting will only be allowed from the 49ers media trailer. That means we won't get the live practice updates we would normally get. Most likely the media will take plenty of notes and then provide post-practice updates after the morning session and after any afternoon session.
